US Lawmakers Agree to Ban Dangerous Chemicals in Toys

Lawmakers charged with finalizing the Consumer Product Safety Commission Reform Act agreed yesterday to include a provision that will ban phthalates from children’s toys and childcare articles. The legislative action validates the concerns of scientists and parents who have been urging a ban, and will bring federal regulation in line with several states and leading retailers that have already taken action to remove phthalates from toys.

Phthalates are chemical substances used to make plastic toys like rubber ducks and bath books soft and flexible. When children put these toys in their mouths, the phthalates can easily leach from toy to child. Phthalates have been linked to serious health concerns including birth defects, early puberty in girls (a risk factor for breast cancer) and liver cancer.

Money Order to reach much faster

The Department of Posts will shortly introduce electronic mode for faster remittance of money. The present money order service of the Department is poised to be completely revamped to provide more efficient and improved service to the customers at no extra cost.

It would also reduce transmission of vouchers from one place to another and provide for centralized information system on the money order service. The initiative is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to make a difference in the Post Office operations and make it a window to the world for the common man.

India, Brazil and South Africa meet to push for cooperation in Health Sector

Health Ministers of India, Brazil and South Africa will meet on Monday and Tuesday to firm up and push forward cooperation in health sector. The Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss will hold bilateral meetings also with his Brazilian and South African counterparts.

Tomorrow, during the bilateral meeting with the Brazilian Health Minister Mr. Jose Gomes Temporao, Dr. Ramadoss will highlight the developments in Indian pharma sector and traditional medicines. Brazilian side will present an overview of the health system of Brazil and food and drug regulatory environment in Brazil.

India’s First Private Mega Power Project set to go commercial

India’s first mega-power project in the private sector is all set to go fully commercial by August 15th. The 1000 Mw O.P. Jindal Super Thermal Power Plant at Tamnar near Raigarh in Chattisgarh being put up by Jindal Power Limited. The Rs 4300 crore power complex which has 4 units of 250 Mw each supplied by BHEL is already feeding over 800 Mw into the grid. Jindal Power Limited is now embarking on a massive expansion programme involving the addition of another 2500 Mw at Tamnar itself and an additional 2500 Mw in Dumka in Jharkhand.

JPL has captive coal mines which is located at a distance of around 8 kms from the super thermal power plant and a conveyor tube has been set up for transportation of coal between coalmines and the power plant. The water requirement of the project is met by a dam, constructed across the river Kurket which is around 25km from the power plant. The time taken from the commercial operations of the four power units from zero date is 36 months which is a record in India.

Zee Business Best B School Survey ranks IIPM as No1 B-School in India

Extenuating its spirited campaign ‘Dare To Think Beyond the IIMs’, the Indian Institute of Planning & Management (IIPM) surpassed the performance of all the IIMs to be rated as the No 1 business school in India for the extensive ‘Global Exposure’ it provides to its students, followed by IIM (A) and IIM (B) at rank 2 and rank 3 respectively. The ranking was conducted by ‘Zee Business Best B School Survey’, a first of its kind on Indian television in association with leading international research firm Synovate. IIPM also achieved Rank 7 (ahead of 2 IIMs) as the Best B School overall, Rank 8 for Best Industry Interface, Rank 9 for Best Placements (ahead of 1 of the IIMs) and Rank 9 for Best Course Content.

NASA Satellites Discover What Powers Northern Lights

Researchers using a fleet of five NASA satellites have discovered that explosions of magnetic energy a third of the way to the moon power substorms that cause sudden brightenings and rapid movements of the aurora borealis, called the Northern Lights.

The culprit turns out to be magnetic reconnection, a common process that occurs throughout the universe when stressed magnetic field lines suddenly snap to a new shape, like a rubber band that’s been stretched too far.
