7 Wow’s, Goregaon West, Mumbai
Located close to the offices, the exhibition ground, a college, a big mall, a car dealership and the residential area, the 7 Wow’s restaurant in Goregaon West is about 8 months in business. It is not hard to find as it is located on S V Road near the flyover and opposite to Patel petrol pump.
As one enters the restaurant premises, they are greeted by pinewood tables and regular chairs for the people who like to sit outside and eat. The entrance door and makeup can give an impression of it being an India or Chinese or an Italian restaurant.
Once through the door’s the decor changes a bit with wooden ceiling and teak wood dining tables. The area is about 2000 sq ft divided into four sections. We have already mentioned the out door section. The inner section has high back sofas and a 10 feet buffet spread at one end and at the other end is for lawn view. The third section is DASTAKHAWN which is a party hall. It has low sitting individual sofa chairs which feels like sitting in dastakhawn (a Persian term which literally means a big, ceremonial dining spread) with vibrant color umbrellas hanging upside down on ceiling. The fourth section is the kitchen.
Since we were invited to review the restaurant, we had the privilege of being greeted by the affable owner Mr. Imran Khan. Mr. Imran is an entrepreneur and a chef (from IHM) so he knows his food. While chatting with him, he mentioned about gold and silver leafing of food. Frankly it did not register with us until the food arrived with silver leafing. Silver leafing is found on sweets. Gold leafing is very expensive and hence not very common. At this point we learnt that Mr. Imran’s family is from Jaipur and is into Gold leafing business for decades. We let Mr. Imran decide our menu. Soon we were served non alcoholic Virginia Majito’s. This had a distinctive taste unlike we have tasted elsewhere. It was followed by Chicken and Mutton Paya soup in olive oil. The chicken soup was good but we recommend you to also taste the Paya soup which is different due to use of a unique recipe. We had anticipated it to be a regular restaurant with regular offerings, but after the initial offerings we braced for something different to be served to us.
Mr. Gaffar, the senior chef, who was formerly in the tandoor section of Jumeirah Beach hotel, came in with his platter of chicken based assorted tandoori items. Memorable among them was a green coloured chicken tikka. They were cooked correctly and we did not spend time finger wrestling the tandoori platter. Masala and a glarlic flavoured rotis also came with the platter. There were silver leafing on the tandoor servings.
During the course, Mr. Gaffar proudly displayed his picture of receiving an award for best Indian hotel in Dubai in 2014. Mr. Gafoora has created some signature dishes for 7 Wow’s. Mutton paya soup, which we mentioned before is his creation. The pride of his signature creation is Chicken Gafoora, which is named after him. The dish consists of chicken breast piece, chicken mince and a gravy which is uniquely made with tomatoes, cheese and butter. It was awesome. Since we do not have a reference for this dish, we tried to compare it with Butter Chicken. Chicken Gafoora is quite different from butter chicken because it is not very sweet.
Another dish we would like to highlight is the Mutton Khorma. The taste of this dish was also unique as it uses curd base with onion gravy and onion fried. This is also a must try at 7 Wow’s.
Most of the dishes were good on stomach as they don’t use too much chilies or sugar or oil.
The restaurant is priced very moderately and has a good portion of servings. For example, the cost of Chicken Gafoora was between Rs 300 – Rs 350 and it is good for a family size of 4. The restaurant receives a lot of orders for daal chawal and it is priced at just Rs 120. This is mostly consumed by the offices nearby. 7 Wow’s runs promotions with 50% off on special occasions, which makes it more affordable. Home deliveries have a 15% discount.
7 wows is a Multi cuisine food – Indian, Mughlai and Chinese. It has both Vegetarian and Non – vegetarian food. We could review only the non-veg part because our stomach could hold only that much. The restaurant is family focused and has no bar. The manager of 7 Wow’s is Mr. Sharma who is ex Oberoi Hotel and has worked in some famous restaurants in Mumbai. It displayed the commitment of the restaurant to grow further. We found the staff very friendly and they carried out servings and plate changes very professionally.
We highly recommend this restaurant for their for 3 reasons. The first one is the difference in taste due to the traditional and unique recipes. The second is the moderate price. And the third is the ambiance and family atmosphere.
