HCC, India’s leading construction and infrastructure development Company, has bagged the prestigious order from National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to construct the 4.4 km elevated highway at Badarpur on National Highway 2 (Mathura Road) near Delhi on BOT basis.
The contract envisages design, construction, development, finance, operation and maintenance of 4.4 kms of six lane elevated road. The cost of the project is estimated at about Rs 340 crores. The company has received the letter of award from NHAI for this project with concession period of 20 years including the construction period of 24 months.

The performance of Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, the premium Container Hub Port on the West Coast of India was reviewed. In 2007-08, JN Port handled traffic of 4.06 million TEUs (55.48 million tones) registering 23% increase over the previous year. This is also 13% more than the target set for this Port. Port says that the performance is further improving this year with the Ship Berth-day output in April-May, 2008 is 21,158 tonnes which is substantial increase over the corresponding period last year.
A number of capacity augmentation projects are in the offing including 330M extension to berth north side of the Port at an estimated cost of Rs. 600 crore for which global bids have already been invited. The procedural work to launch the much awaited Fourth Container Terminal and Marine Chemical Terminal, at an estimated cost of Rs. 4100 crore is already on. This is likely to add the capacity of 30 million tonnes for container & 8.80 million tonnes for liquid/POL.

The turnover of Chennai Port has increased from Rs. 413.51 crore to Rs.890.40 crore, a record 115.3% increase in 2007-08 over 2003-04. This was revealed at a review meeting of performance and development projects of Chennai Port Trust. The increased turnover has enabled the Port to take up larger number of capacity augmentation projects.
There was also a review on the progress of the proposed mega terminal at Chennai with a draft of 22 Meter which is coming up with an investment of Rs. 3105 crores to handle ultra large container ships of 18,000 TEU at the Port. Port informed that the project has generated considerable interest among the prospective bidders and nearly 40 private players have participated in the pre-bid meeting.

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (ONGC) will supply 0.5 million cubic metres per day of Gas for a period of 15 years to the gas-based power station of North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Ltd. (NEEPCO) coming up at Monarchak at Tripura.
The agreement assumes significance as this is the first agreement to be signed by ONGC at market price in Tripura. NEEPCO plans to produce 104 MW of power by end 2010 from this combined cycle power plant.

The development plans of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International (NSCBI) Airport, Kolkata today got an unconditional Pre-Investment Board (PIB) clearance. It will now go for the approval of the Government (CCEA approval) and work is expected to begin in two-months time.
In April, 2007, the Government decided that the Kolkata airport would be developed to international standards by the Airports Authority of India (AAI). In August 2007, the AAI submitted the proposal for PIB approval. In October 2007, an Inter-Ministerial Group (IMG) cleared the proposal and in December 2007, Planning Commission accorded in principle approval for the development of NSCBI airport, Kolkata. The Ministry for Environment gave approval to the project in March, 2008. Meanwhile, AAI has prepared detailed estimate and tendered documents. (more…)

The first 500 MW unit of NTPC’s giant power project at Sipat in Bilaspur district of Chattisgarh went on full load today, almost a full year after it was declared commissioned. It will go fully commercial in about three weeks time. The second 500 MW unit is expected to go fully commercial by October, 2008. Both the 500 MW units use boilers and turbines manufactured by BHEL.
The two 500 MW units form Stage-II of the project, while three supercritical 660 MW units form Stage-I. The boilers for these 660 MW units are being supplied by the South Korean company, Doosan and the turbines by the Russian firm Power Machines. Stage-I has been delayed by well over two years. It is now expected that the first 660 MW unit, which will also be the first supercritical unit in the country, will be commissioned by March 31st, 2009 and go commercial three-four months thereafter. NTPC has long-standing contractual disputes with Doosan.

Sensis Corporation has been awarded a contract by the Airports Authority of India to expand its Advanced - Surface Movement Guidance and Control System (A-SMGCS) at New Delhi Airport irritatingly named after Indira Gandhi. The expanded A-SMGCS will provide surveillance coverage to address a terminal and runway expansion project. The expansion will include additional Sensis Multistatic Dependent Surveillance (MDS) multilateration sensors and a second Surface Movement Radar.
Sensis A-SMGCS at New Delhi fuses data from multiple surveillance sources, including Sensis MDS, X-band radar and an ADS-B-based vehicle tracking system, to deliver accurate and reliable data to the Sensis Multi-Sensor Data Processor (MSDP). The MSDP fuses the surveillance data with advanced collision detection and alerting functionality to provide controllers with visible and audible alerts when an incursion may occur. Sensis A-SMGCS has been operational at the airport since 2006.

An ambitious project conceived to bridge the gap between India and Bharat, has been aimed to provide road facilities to the remotest of remote habitations and villages in the country. Since its inception in 2002, the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana has been instrumental in improving connectivity between the rural habitats and their urban counterparts. A flagship programme of the Central Government, under this scheme Sikkim has taken the stride in supplementing the need of better connectivity to the villages.
Till its sixth phase, more than 199 kms of rural road is planned to be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs. 8961.46044 lakh in the West District of Sikkim. Some of the remote and inaccessible villages now can boast of having all-weather road connectivity, which till recent years had been left in isolation.

Rural Electrification Corporation Limited (REC) which has been supporting power sector through a range of measures and initiatives, achieved yet another milestone by sanctioning a term loan of Rs. 3796 cores to NTPC Tamil Nadu Power Company, a 50:50 joint Venture Company of NTPC and Tamil Nadu Electricity Board. As against the normal practice of project financers, funding such mega project through consortium route, REC has decided to fund it single handedly. This is one of the highest sanctions made by REC for financing a power generation project, which makes a record. The project will be commissioned in the 11th plan and is likely to add 1000 MW thermal generation capacity to the state of Tamil Nadu and would contribute significantly to development of power infrastructure in the State.

United States Ex-Im Bank Chairman and President James H. Lambright signed a Memoranda of Understanding with the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA), Punjab National Bank (PNB) and the Power Finance Corporation (PFC) in New Delhi on May 14, 2008. Chairman Lambright, right, shakes hands with Debashish Majumdar, chairman and managing director, IREDA after signing the agreement. The Ex-Im Bank has approved a $2.2 billion Indian Infrastructure Facility that will support U.S. exports to Indian projects.
The Infrastructure Development Finance Corp., Industrial Development Bank of India, State Bank of India and Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services are also participating in the facility. Chairman Lambright underscored the rising importance of India to the U.S. export market, saying that India may soon become Ex-Im’s number one customer — ahead of even Canada and Mexico.
