Bollywood Stars Join PETA’s ‘Ban Bullock-Pulled Oil Carts’ Plea

A quickly increasing number of national celebrities have added their names to a petition calling on the controller of rationing to ban the use of bullocks to pull heavy oil carts through the streets of Mumbai. The petition – which was introduced by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India– has garnered support from Akshaye Khanna, Rahul Khanna, Raveena Tandon, Eesha Koppikar, Arjun Rampal, Rahul Dev, Avanti Birla, Sandiip Sikcand and others.

Following PETA’s complaints, even the oil companies have issued letters to the controller of rationing through the Maharashtra state level coordinator, Shri R.K. Panda of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd., asking for bullock-pulled oil carts to be discontinued. And now, Justice C S Dharmadhikari (Retd. Judge of the Bombay High Court), the chairman of the Committee to Monitor Animal Welfare Laws in Maharashtra, has asked the controller what action he plans to take.

ESPN STAR Sports Retains Title of Asia Cup to Promote STAR Cricket

ESPN STAR Sports has retained the title of Asia Cup 2008 to promote STAR Cricket, its 24 hour dedicated channel on cricket targeted at the Indian subcontinent. All the 13 matches of ‘STAR Cricket Asia Cup’ will be broadcast live & exclusive on ESPN and STAR Cricket starting June 24, 2008.

Speaking on the association of STAR Cricket with the Asia Cup, R C Venkateish, Managing Director, ESPN Software India Pvt Ltd, said, “STAR Cricket is a dedicated channel for the Indian subcontinent and there cannot be a better association than aligning with the Asia Cup where all the major cricket forces from the sub continent including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are participating. I am confident that this branding and marketing initiative will go a long way in promoting the channel further in this region.”

Indian actress and social activist Shabana Azmi is ‘SAARC Goodwill Ambassador’

Internationally acclaimed actress and an eminent social activist, Ms Shabana Azmi has been appointed as the SAARC Goodwill Ambassador for HIV/AIDS Programme for SAARC countries in the region. SAARC member nations (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and Pakistan, Maldives, Sri Lanka and India) who met in Kathmandu in the month of April this year, selected Ms Shabana Azmi and the legendary cricketer Mr Sanath Jayasuriya as SAARC Goodwill Ambassadors for HIV/AIDS from a large number of nominations which had been received from the member countries.

Ms. Shabana Azmi’s name was recommended by National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) The conferment of the title and the launch of the programme for SAARC Goodwill Ambassadors is likely to take place during the 15th SAARC Summit to be held in Colombo, Sri Lanka on 2nd and 3rd August, 2008. (more…)

UEFA sees India as an emerging TV market for UEFA EURO 2008T

UEFA, the Union of European Football Associations, has marked India as an emerging TV market for UEFA EURO 2008T - the second biggest sporting event globally in terms of TV viewership. The confidence of UEFA derives from the fact that soccer’s popularity has been growing consistently in India over the past few years and the game has firmly established itself as the second most popular sport in the country. All the 31 matches of UEFA EURO 2008T will be shown LIVE on ESPN.

Speaking on the increasing soccer popularity in India, UEFA’s Marketing Director Philippe Le Floc’h said, “India is an emerging TV market for football and we are very interested in the outcome of UEFA Euro 2008T there. We expect India to be amongst the biggest viewers of the UEFA EURO 2008T football experience outside of Europe.

The Alchemist to be on the Big Screen

The Weinstein Company announced today at the Cannes Film Festival that Harvey Weinstein will produce Paulo Coelho’s international best-selling novel “The Alchemist” and that The Weinstein Company will hold exclusive world-wide motion picture and television rights for the film.

Various locations in Europe, as well as the Middle East, including Jordan, Abu Dhabi and Northern Africa will serve as backdrops for this global shoot. To join Fishburne in the cast, a search in Spain and Latin America for the role of Santiago will start shortly and other stars are expected to be announced to round out the cast.

Ltd., India’s leading content creation company, along with SAB Television recently announced the launch of ‘KRAZY KIYA RE (KKR)’– an innovative format show which seeks to unearth the ‘creative genes’ in our collective singing talent. The primary idea of all singing talent shows thus far has been to only showcase the vocal power and tone of the contestants, but rarely do these shows explore the ‘creative’ powers of the singer to twist, translate or googly the song! This has never been attempted earlier in a LIVE format talent show which aired on SAB TV from 9th May 2008.

UK-India film co-production agreement to come into force

In the UK more than 2.5 million people went to see Hindi films in 2005 and Indian film accounted for over 16% of all UK releases. The UK and Indian Governments have successfully completed negotiations, which will enable the UK-India film co-production agreement to come into force. The treaty will enable UK and Indian filmmakers to work together to co-produce films that will be eligible for national status in both countries.

As a direct result of the treaty it is expected that 10 UK-Indian co-productions will be made within the first two years. The treaty will also contribute significantly to the strengthening of the skills base in both India and the UK.

Anushka Sharma is the one of the Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi

For one girl it is the start of an improbable dream. It is a dream that many have perhaps had: to debut in a prestigious film from India’s most respected production house, directed by a director taking up the baton after eight long years, and that too opposite the nation’s biggest star. But it is model Anushka Sharma whose dream has come true.

Yash Chopra, Chairman, Yash Raj Films, today announced that the nineteen year old from Bangalore has been identified to play the female lead opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Aditya Chopra’s third film as director “Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi”. And it is finally the end of all the speculation and conjecture that had started about the identity of the female lead ever since the film was announced.
