UK to offer point based work opportunities for international graduates

From 30 June, international graduates who have studied in the UK will be free to seek employment for up to two years under Tier 1 of the Points Based System (PBS). This is twice the length of stay permitted under the old International Graduate Scheme (IGS) rules and allows the most able international graduates to find work in the UK without the need for a sponsor or work permit. The government is committed to facilitating the entry of skilled migrants and encouraging inward investment, both of which will benefit the UK economy. With effect from 30 June, Tier 1 of the PBS is also being extended to include Entrepreneurs and Investors.

Europe and Israel to upgrade ties

The EU-Israel Association Council – the body, headed by foreign ministers, which conducts the bilateral relations between Israel and European Union member states – is announcing today an upgrade in the relations between Israel and the EU. The announcement will be made at a meeting in Luxembourg , attended by Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Tzipi Livni and EU foreign ministers. This will usher in a new era in Israeli-European relations.

More than a year ago, FM Livni attended a meeting of the Association Council and initiated the upgrading process between Israel and the EU in recognition of Israel ’s upcoming 60th birthday. At the meeting, a working group was set up to examine the Israeli foreign minister’s proposal and to determine the existing and new areas in which cooperation between Israel and the EU would be enhanced.

Ground breaking ceremony for UK’s first Hindu faith-based Voluntary Aided state school

Groundbreaking ceremony, combined with a small religious ceremony that asks forgiveness from the earth before any building commences was performed to mark the beginning of its construction. The Krishna-Avanti Primary School proposes to be UK’s first Hindu faith-based Voluntary Aided state school and as such will not charge fees.

Slovenia Informs IAEA of Reactor Shut-down, no radiation

The Slovenian Nuclear Safety Administration (SNSA) on 4th June informed the IAEA´s Incident & Emergency Centre (IEC) about an “unusual event” at the country´s Krsko Nuclear Power Plant, but said there was no radiation release to the environment.

An “unusual event” is the lowest level of emergency out of four levels as defined by the SNSA.

France International Nuclear Agency to be formed within the AEC

The Minister of State, Minister of Ecology, Energy, Sustainable Development and Urban Planning, has introduced a decree authorising the creation of the France International Nuclear Agency at the Atomic Energy Commission.

The creation of this Agency forms part of the French approach regarding international cooperation in the civil nuclear field, which was desired by the President of the French Republic.

French migrants sending the most money back home from UK, Indians in second position

Bosnian Croat commander convicted by UN

A Bosnian Croat military commander convicted by a United Nations war crimes tribunal for his role in the torture and persecutions of Muslims living in the Mostar area of Bosnia and Herzegovina during the Balkan wars of the 1990s will serve the remainder of his 20-year sentence in Italy.

The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), which sits in The Hague, announced today that Mladen Naletilić was transferred yesterday to detention in Italy.

ESA to recruit new European astronauts

With ESA astronauts working in the Columbus laboratory onboard the International Space Station (ISS) and the first of ESA’s new ATV cargo ships having delivered fresh supplies to the station, ESA’s human spaceflight activities have entered a new era. ESA is seeking out new talent to bolster its Astronaut Corps for future manned missions to the ISS, the Moon and beyond.

The European Space Agency sent human spaceflight for the first time in 1978 with its first astronaut selection, followed in 1983 by the first Spacelab mission. Preparations for ESA’s Columbus laboratory project, meanwhile, involved a second selection of astronauts in 1992.

The selected candidates will then join the European Astronaut Corps and begin basic training at the European Astronaut Centre (ESA-EAC) in Cologne, Germany.
