Municipal, Indl. Wastes Can Generate 2500 MW Of Energy says ASSOCHAM

Friday, June 13th, 2008 |

Expedite setting up of waste energy projects as there is potential of generating 2500 megawatt of power from urban, municipal and industrial wastes in large cities, besides metro in next 2-3 years to partly meet energy shortages, according to a Study brought out by ASSOCHAM .

The Study on `Mitigating Climate Change : The Indian Perspective’ indicates that about 40,000 million tonnes of solid wastes and 5000 million cubic metre of liquid waste is generated every year in the urban areas of the country which can be suitably recycled for power generation.

ONGC to become carbon neutral

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008 |

In the interest of sustainable development for times to come, oil major ONGC is making all efforts to become carbon neutral in its oil-field business. This implies that whatever Greenhouse Gases it is necessarily generating to produce Crude Oil & Natural Gas, will be compensated by ONGC’s environment-friendly measures like eco-forestation.

This was communicated to all ONGCians by ONGC’s CMD Mr. R S Sharma, in his address to ONGCians on the Environment Day on 5th June 2008. Speaking on that occasion in ONGC, Mr. R H Khawaja, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Forest & Environment, Govt. of India, emphasized on the need to take substantive action to control carbon emission, rather than, token gestures to save the environment. He appreciated ONGC’s efforts towards Environment Management and strategies drawn to mitigate the GHG emissions.

Storage of important water reservoirs in India

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008 |

Central Water Commission (CWC) is monitoring storage position of 81 important reservoirs spread all over the country, of which as many as 36 reservoirs have significant hydro-power benefits with installed capacity of more than 60 MW each. The combined live storage in these 81 reservoirs at the beginning of monsoon i.e. 1st June, 2007 was 25 per cent of their designed capacity and stood at 21 per cent of the designed capacity as on 29th May 2008. The present storage is 92 per cent of the last year’s storage and 140 per cent of last 10 years average storage during the same period. Out of these 81 reservoirs there are presently 19 reservoirs where this year’s storage is 80 per cent or less than the average of previous 10 years and in the remaining 62 reservoirs the storage is more than 80 per cent of the average of previous 10 years.

CII launches corporate greenhouse gas Inventory Program

Thursday, May 29th, 2008 |

CII has launched the India’s first corporate greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory program in partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the World Resources Institute, Washington. The launching of this GHG inventory program is part of the CII’s new initiative “Mission on Sustainable Growth”.

CII’s program is based on the internationally recognized World Resources Institute/World Business Council for Sustainable Development GHG Protocol and U.S. EPA’s Climate Leaders program, and is supported by the Asia Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and Climate.

Beached Dolphin rescued on Mexican Island

Sunday, May 25th, 2008 |

A large male dolphin stranded himself Sunday morning May 18, 2008, on the coral on the beach just beside Villa La Bella, an American owned bed and breakfast, on Isla Mujeres, Mexico. Their quick actions resulted in a successful rescue and release.

One of the workers Luis Alberto Romero Trujillo at Villa La Bella spotted the distressed dolphin around 8:45 AM Sunday morning when he went to hang the hammocks in the yard overlooking the beach. He quickly notified Curtis and Ashley Blogin, American owners of the bed and breakfast, and the two raced to see what they could do to help.

Tree Cover of India

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008 |

India is endowed with a rich and diverse forest vegetation. The forests of the country vary. India is the second most populous and seventh largest country in the world having a population of over one billion with 1.8% of world’s forest cover. It is, however, important to differentiate between the forest cover and the tree cover, i.e., Trees Outside Forests (TOF).

There exists a significant tree cover wealth outside the conventional forest area, most of which is less than one hectare in extent. They include small patches of trees in plantations, and woodlands, or scattered trees on farms, homestead and urban areas or trees along linear features such as roads, canals, bunds etc. They constitute significant areas. Trees Outside Forests (TOF) are considered an alternative but significant source of fuel, fodder and timber. They give economic stability, support development and also provide environmental relief to the local people.

Conference on Carbon Credit Emphasizes Thrust on Cleaner Technologies

Saturday, May 17th, 2008 |

Increasingly global economies are becoming dependant on renewable sources of energy like wind, hydroelectricity, bio gas, bio fuel and solar energy. While dwelling on the current position in the energy sector, Mr Surender Mehta, Senior Vice President, RRB Energy Ltd commented that In India though carbon trading happens on MCX and NCDEX, participation is not very encouraging because of hosts of factors ranging from absence of big financial players like banks and mutual funds; relative lack of awareness among corporate and stakeholders and unavailability of trained skilled manpower’. He was speaking at the Conference on Carbon Credits organised by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII-Northern Region) yesterday.

Delivering the theme address at the Conference, Mr Rajesh Srivastava, Managing Director, Rabo India Finance Ltd said “Climate change has become more and more evident, which is all the more reason for Kyoto to be implemented at a faster pace.” (more…)

ruguayan Researcher Discovers the True Cause of the Climate Change

Monday, May 12th, 2008 |

The Uruguayan researcher Luis Seguessa recently stated in press conferences held in Latin America, that the internal combustion engine is the chief culprit for the degradation of the ozone layer, global warming and climate change, not so much for the gas emissions into the atmosphere as for the huge amount of oxygen they consume.

“A vehicle consumes an average of between 50 and 100 liters of air per second and, taking into account the current car-driving population, that represents 20,000 million liters of air which are consumed per second on the planet and which are returned to the atmosphere half burnt and in explosive form. Twenty percent of this air is pure oxygen which is taken from the ozone layer. The figure is so big that it does not give vegetation time to replace this loss,” stated Luis Seguessa.

“The ozone layer is not just an oxygen reserve, but also a natural covering which protects the earth from the intense cold of outer space and the power of the sun. As we lose it, we are experiencing sharp temperature changes during the day and this will become more common,” he indicated. “Moreover, without an ozone layer, nature gets out of balance and that is why we experience serious climatic problems, such as flooding, droughts, tsunamis, and the thawing of the polar ice caps.”

Likewise, Seguessa maintained that “the speed at which the ozone layer is being lost is occurring with geometric not arithmetic progression as was thought, and in a very short time the great natural source of oxygen supply on the planet, which the ozone layer is, will be used up.”

He highlighted the importance of automotive companies replacing internal combustion engines with electric motors or other ecologically sound technologies which do not consume air, and every human being (children, adults and the elderly) committing themselves to plant at least seven trees to increase the volume of oxygen in the atmosphere.

Luis Seguessa, who has been studying climatic phenomena for over 20 years and who is leader and founder of the Fundación Códigos based in Punta del Este, Uruguay, concluded: “Our children and grandchildren have the right to inherit a world like the one we received.”
