Bollywood Stars Join PETA’s ‘Ban Bullock-Pulled Oil Carts’ Plea

A quickly increasing number of national celebrities have added their names to a petition calling on the controller of rationing to ban the use of bullocks to pull heavy oil carts through the streets of Mumbai. The petition – which was introduced by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India– has garnered support from Akshaye Khanna, Rahul Khanna, Raveena Tandon, Eesha Koppikar, Arjun Rampal, Rahul Dev, Avanti Birla, Sandiip Sikcand and others.

Following PETA’s complaints, even the oil companies have issued letters to the controller of rationing through the Maharashtra state level coordinator, Shri R.K. Panda of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd., asking for bullock-pulled oil carts to be discontinued. And now, Justice C S Dharmadhikari (Retd. Judge of the Bombay High Court), the chairman of the Committee to Monitor Animal Welfare Laws in Maharashtra, has asked the controller what action he plans to take.

Male bosses in preference, says survey

Nearly 68% women and men prefer to have male bosses in emerging corporate culture as this lot holds “males are faster in taking decisions, quicker in disposing off their assigned jobs and much more focused and straight towards their work and at the same time passionate in awarding their subordinates with functional autonomy to completely let them enjoy their work.”

Sikh Boy’s Turban Set Alight in US School

A fellow student from Hightstown High School in New Jersey, set fire to the religious turban worn by the Sikh teenager in an unprovoked attack on school grounds. The victim is one of only two turban-wearing Sikhs attending Hightstown High School in New Jersey. On Monday, May 5, 2008, the school held a fire drill and all students were instructed to gather on the school playground.

The Sikh student was chatting to his friends when a student he did not know came up behind him and set fire to his patka (a smaller version of a full Sikh turban) using a lighter. The Sikh student “felt something hot” on his head and immediately patted his patka to put out the flames. Disaster was averted, but a great deal of emotional damage had already been done.

Indian Salaried Class prefer Govt. Banks over private sector banks

60% of salaried employees prefer state owned banking mechanism for insurance purposes as they feel that such institutions are more reliable, secure and are trustworthy while 20% prefer private banks for the same purpose and remaining 20% have shown their indifference to either of the two, according to findings of The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM).

The aforesaid findings of the Chamber have been contained in a Study which it brought out on `Growth and Emergence of Public and Private Sector Banks in India : Customer’s and Investor’s Perceptions’, in which over 250 salaried employees, businessmen, lawyers have been interviewed.

One size no longer fits all, individual consumer experience say’s Prof. C.K. Prahalad

A lively discussion on a new approach to value creation based on individual consumer experience fulfilled fom resources from multiple vendors provided the backdrop to the global launch of Prof. C.K. Prahalad’s new book, ‘The New Age of Innovation’, co-authored with Prof. M.S. Krishnan, took place in New Delhi on 17 April 2008. The book was released by Mr. Kapil Sibal, Minister of Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, at a session organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the Aspen Institute India.

Mr. Tarun Das, Chief Mentor, CII and President, Aspen Institute India, Mr. Venu Srinivasan, Managing Director, Sundaram-Clayton Limited, and the two authors were present at the session. Both authors are professors at the Ross School of Business, University of Michigan. Prof Prahalad’s previous book, ‘The Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid’ transformed Indian industry’s view of the poor as consumers.
