Indian develops Molecule to combat malaria

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008 |

Dr Rajnikant Dixit, a post-doctoral fellow at the National Institute of Health, Maryland, USA, claims to have discovered a molecule which can help in checking the spread of malaria.

Currently working in the advanced field of mosquito-parasite interaction biology, Dr Dixit has underlined in his research study that the spread of malarial parasite can be checked through genetic engineering.

Solar Energy Centre develops Advanced photovoltaic system

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008 |

Solar Energy Centre (SEC) has developed facilities for research, development and evaluation of solar thermal and solar photovoltaic (PV) technologies. PV modules generate electricity as long as the sun shines. It is, however, necessary to qualify these modules for their performance and life before their large scale deployment.

The existing sun simulator at the Centre is capable of testing the performance of PV modules of dimensions upto 150 cm X 70 cm. The environmental conditioning tests of these PV modules of capacity upto 75W are carried out through different environmental chambers that simulate various temperature, humidity and radiation conditions.

Government, industry and academia to collaborate for leveraging knowledge arbitrage

Saturday, April 26th, 2008 |

A “National Dialogue on Leveraging Knowledge Arbitrage for India’s Innovation Ecology’ was organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry and the Ministry of Science and technology on the eve of the World Intellectual Property (IP) Day in New Delhi. India spends 0.8 per cent of its GDP on research. Of this, the government contributes 0.6 per cent and only one-fourth comes from private sector.

N N Prasad, Joint Secretary, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, stressed on the need for modernising the IP administration and creating more awareness regarding the various issues concerning Intellectual Property. The government is launching a nationwide awareness campaign on Intellectual Property starting on World IP Day on April 26, he said.

CSIR maps Indian genes

Friday, April 25th, 2008 |

The largest scientific endeavor in the field of biology (after the green revolution effort of ICAR in the 1970s), involving over 150 scientists and researchers drawn from six CSIR laboratories (IGIB, IICB, CCMB, CDRI, ITRC, IMT), Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata and anthropologists from various institutes of India, and The Centre for Genomic Applications, Delhi, has generated genetic information on over 4000 genetic markers from over 1000 biomedically important and pharmacogenetically relevant genes in reference populations encompassing diversity of populations from across the country.

The first phase of these results on 55 populations involving several hundred markers has been released in the April 2008 issue of Journal of Genetics (J Genet, 87, 3-20, April 2008). It would help in the construction of ‘specific drug response/disease predisposition maps’ to aid policy level decision making for drug dosage interventions and disease risk management, especially for complex as well as infectious diseases.
