CII launches corporate greenhouse gas Inventory Program
CII has launched the India’s first corporate greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory program in partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the World Resources Institute, Washington. The launching of this GHG inventory program is part of the CII’s new initiative “Mission on Sustainable Growth”.
CII’s program is based on the internationally recognized World Resources Institute/World Business Council for Sustainable Development GHG Protocol and U.S. EPA’s Climate Leaders program, and is supported by the Asia Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and Climate.
During the launch, Mr Jim Sullivan, Director, USEPA’s Climate Leaders program, highlighted the success of Climate Leaders program in the US and the emission reduction benefits achieved through the program.
Mr R Muralidhar, Under Secretary, Department of Policy & Promotion, Ministry of Commerce & Industry mentioned the need for adopting cleaner technologies by Indian industries to become more competitive and efficient.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Manish Bapna, Executive Vice President & Managing Director, World Resources Institute highlighted the issues of climate change and GHG programs followed in various countries for reducing the greenhouse gas emission.
Till date, over 40 companies have signed the CII code for ecologically sustainable.
CII’s new program, will work with participating companies to develop GHG inventories of their operations, analyze and implement opportunities for reducing the intensity emissions, including energy efficiency & renewable energy.
The draft GHG Inventorisation Program gives an overview about the CII corporate GHG inventory & reduction program. The draft will be in the public domain and seek suggestions for further improvements.
