Current government to ban exit polls

Faced with defeats the current government is set to end the trend of exit polls. A proposal on ban on exit polls was forwarded by the Election Commission recommending to the Government for the need for a specific provision in the Representation of the People Act, 1951 prohibiting the publishing and disseminating of results of any opinion poll starting from the date of notification of election and till the completion of poll in the last phase of election. The proposal is under consideration of the Government.

The Congress (I) loosing almost all the polls held in past 5 years has dubbed opinion polls as unfair. The RJD which ha faced constant defeats in its home state has demanded that astrological predictions should not be published or telecast.

In 1999 the Supreme Court ruled in favour of media which challenged a similar order.
