A grid interactive power generation installed capacity of 11449 MW has been set up in the country till and of last March. This is based on various renewable energy sources. This comprises of 7939 MW wind power, 2062 MW small hydropower, 1446 MW bio power and 2 MW solar power. Besides this large number off grid/decentralized renewable energy systems/devices are making a significant contribution to conservation of conventional energy.

A capacity addition of 15000 MW from renewable energy sources has been proposed during the 11th Plan period.

Cost of 1 MW solar power plant between RS. 16 TO RS.20 crore

The estimated capital cost of setting up a Solar Power Plant is in the range of Rs.16 crore to Rs. 20 crore per MW. The cost of generation is around Rs.12 to Rs.15 per unit, depending upon technology efficiency etc.

India has taken several steps in order to make solar energy systems more cost effective. They include Research and Development, improve the efficiency and performance of solar energy systems, incentives to manufacturers and others and subsidy to encourage utilization of solar energy systems.
