IAF IL-76 Airlifts more Relief to Myanmar
An Indian Air Force IL-76 aircraft today airlifted more relief supplies to cyclone-hit Myanmar. The aircraft took off from Bagdogra carrying over 12,000 packets of readymade meals for the people of Myanmar, devastated by the severe cyclone ‘Nargis’. With this India has dispatched three IL-76, two AN-32 and two shiploads of relief supplies including medicines, food, tents and clothing to Yangon.
India has been at the forefront of countries to rise up to the aid of its eastern neighbour. Indian armed forces have mobilized a comprehensive relief package under Operation Sahayata. The Integrated Defence Staff (IDS) of the Ministry of Defence, which is overseeing the relief operations, has sent about 124 tonnes of relief material worth over Rs. 6 crores.
Earlier the Indian Air Force had sent two plane loads of supplies and Indian navy had sent two ships to Myanmar.
Indian Naval Chief Admiral Sureesh Mehta during the naval commanders conference had said that if government wants INS Jalashva is ready to be sent to Myanmar.
