India to host the Permanent Secretariat of Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Housing and Urban Development

The establishment of the Permanent Secretariat of the ‘Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Housing and Urban Development’ at New Delhi was endorsed by the Housing and Urban Development Ministers of the countries in the Asia-Pacific region at the Second Asia-Pacific Ministers’ Conference on Housing and Urban Development held at Tehran during May 12-14, 2008, wherein the conference was represented by 37 countries. This was informed by Shri Sunil Kumar Singh, Chief Coordinator of the Bureau of APMCHUD and Joint Secretary (Housing), Government of India.

This conference was to follow up of the first APMCHUD Conference held at New Delhi during December, 2006. The inaugural session of the ministerial segment of the conference was presided over by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran. During the inaugural session, the chairpersonship of APMCHUD was handed over by the Indian Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation to the Hon’ble Minister for Housing and Urban Development, Islamic Republic of Iran, Mr. Mohammed Saeedi-Kya.

During the conference, the next bureau of the APMCHUD was also elected and India, represented by the Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, was re-elected. The other members of the Bureau are Australia, China, Indonesia, Iran, Pakistan and Qatar.

The conference adopted a ‘Tehran Declaration’ and an ‘Action Plan for regional cooperation on promoting sustainable urban development among Asia-Pacific countries’ towards collectively addressing the challenges of sustainable urbanization.

APMCHUD, an initiative launched in India in December 2006 with the collaboration of the UN-Habitat, bringing together 69 countries in the Asia-Pacific region, offers a unique framework to address the regional challenges in the Housing and Urban Development sector through collaborative efforts and the sharing of experiences and best practices.
