Manipur cabinet agrees to provide guns to Heirok, Chajing
The Manipur State Cabinet today decided to provide the Heirok and Chajing people with guns for self protection. It was decided following the slaying of three people and injuring another by opening fire by PREPAK cadres at a Thabal Chongba venue at Heirok and killing of a 53 year old man by KCP (MTF) at Chajing Konjeng Leikai. They will be armed with .303 rifles and other weapons for use in safeguarding the locals from militant attacks.
In addition two units of security posts under the control of newly designated Special Police Officers will be set up at the earliest, within June this year, at Heirok and Lilong Chajing.
500 local volunteers, 300 from Heirok in Thoubal district and 200 from Lilong Chajing will be selected and imparted training on the use of weapons and techniques to protect themselves from the militants. They will be deployed in their respective localities with the weapons supplied by the state government under the control of the special police officer unit. The SPOs will function under the State Police Department. The educational qualification of these SPOs will be equivalent to those of state police constables and they will receive monthly salary of Rs 3000 each. The salary, ration and other facilities of the SPOs will be provided by the Central Government. The SPOs will also be given basic training on using arms for a month.
North East Advisor of the Ministry of Home Affairs MB Kaushal and Joint Secretary Naveen Burmah have also arrived at Imphal today to discuss the State Government’s initiative with top police officials of the State.
The State Cabinet held today has also decided to reward the police team led by SP Imphal East Th Radheshyam with Rs 10 lakhs for their successful operation in Mysore in which six PULF cadres including four top functionaries were arrested.
