Max Balaji Hospital Starts Kidney Transplant Centre
Awareness about Kidney disease is becoming increasingly important as far as the morbidity and mortality is concerned. Important causes of renal diseases are congenital diseases (Polycystic Kidneys), infections. The current lifestyle, which is increasing the incidence of hypertension and diabetes, is also responsible for rising numbers of kidney failure.
Diseases of the kidney and urinary tract contribute to over 8,50,000 deaths and over 15 million disability-adjusted life years the world over. According to WHO 2002 estimates, with an estimated end stage renal disease of 100 per million people, there could be about 100,000 patients per year in India.
“Renal Replacement Therapy involves Dialysis (Haemo as well as Peritoneal) and Renal Transplantation,” said Dr. Satish Chhabra, Head, Nephrology, Max Balaji Hospital.
Haemodialysis involves availability of sophisticated machines and hospital services and thus remains very expensive .The availability of centres are too few as per the number patients. According to one study there are more than 1 lakh new patients, which require renal replacement therapy in our country every year. CAPD also has its own problem because of increased incidence of infection in hot and humid weather of this country. Also both these modalities are awfully expensive and cannot be afforded by a vast majority of our population.
“Renal transplantation is the best option available for our country. While transplant centers are spread across Delhi and the NCR, the population in trans-Yamuna still lacked access to specialized centers until now,” Dr. Chabbra added.
Max Balaji Hospital has now obtained a license from concerned health authorities to start the renal transplant services which we will be starting in the month of June this year, thus, completing the basket of total Management of Renal Failure of International standards.
In association with the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Max Balaji Hospital is holding a Continuing Medical Education (CME) on May 25th 2008, to create awareness about the etiological factors and preventive aspects. The CME will also focus on aspects, indications and applications of renal replacement therapy.
Haemo-dialysis and Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) are already available at Max Balaji Hospital which is well equipped with the latest computerized dialysis machines, reverse osmosis water plant to provide pure water as well as state-of-the-art facilities in the operating rooms and the ICUs and is equipped with trained staff.
According to Dr. Rajeev Sood, Senior Consultant, Urology & Renal Transplant, Max Healthcare, “The best quality of life a patient of renal failure can have is following a transplant. Unfortunately, not enough kidney donors are available and hence the patients of renal failure end up continuing on dialysis. Pre-emptive renal transplantation involves offering transplantation to a patient without exposing him to even a single dialysis with its attendant risks of serious infections.”
Dispelling the common myth that dialysis is cheaper than renal transplantation, Dr. Sood added, “If a successful transplant lives longer than 2 years then the costs are cheaper compared to keeping a patient on dialysis for the same period or longer.”
