NHDP Phase IV not approved by the government
Implementation of the proposal for converting 20,000 kilometers of existing single lane/intermediate lane National Highways to two lane National Highways with paved shoulders under National Highways Development Project (NHDP)-Phase-IV, has not been approved by the Government.
The government feels that it is too early to indicate the details of stretches, implementing agency, fund allocation, time-frame for completion of the projects and other modalities.
Seven crore registered vehicles in 2004
As per the latest available data the total number of registered motor vehicles in India as on 31st March 2004 was 7,27,17,935.
The number of motor vehicles had steadily increased at an average rate of 10% per annum during the years 1994-2004. However, the road space is not increasing commensurate with the increase in number of vehicles resulting in many serious problems such as traffic congestion, increase in number of road accidents etc.
