Operation Sahayata; IAF, Navy Rush Relief to Myanmar
Two Indian Air Force aircraft today airlifted relief supplies to cyclone-hit Myanmar. The AN-32 aircraft carried medicines and tents for the affected people, devastated by the severe cyclone ‘Nargis’. Besides, two Indian Navy ships carrying medicines, food, tents and clothing have already reached capital Yangon. INS Rana and Kirpan left Port Blair Monday (May 5th) night and, latest reports said, the ships were anchored four miles off harbour at 0500 hours this morning, awaiting offloading by Manmar authorities.
India has been at the forefront of countries to rise up to the aid of Myanmar in this hour of crisis. The cyclone ‘Nargis’ devastated large parts of Myanmar on the night of May 2nd. More than 20,000 people are feared dead and several thousands rendered homeless.
Indian government has conveyed condolence to the government of Myanmar and the Indian armed forces have mobilized a comprehensive relief package under Operation Sahayata. The Integrated Defence Staff (IDS) plans to despatch another relief aircraft soon.
