Pamba Action Plan for pollution abatement

The Ministry of Environment & Forests has sanctioned Rs. 18.45 crore for Pamba River Action Plan in Kerala. The amount has been sanctioned under the National River Conservation Plan on 70:30 cost sharing bases between the Central Government and the State Government of Kerala where the Central Government’s share in the project will be Rs. 12.92 crore and the State Government’s share will be Rs. 5.53 crore. This amount was sanctioned in the month of May, 2003.

Under the project, 12 components of works have been approved. It has been intertwined with the Sabrimala Master Plan. Accordingly 3 MLD Sewage treatment plant will be established and Sabrimala and one Sewage treatment plant of 1.5 MLD capacity will be established at Pamba. This will incur Rs. 360.00 lakhs. The third component includes Sewage collection tank pumping system and sewer lines in Sabrimala and Pamba at the cost of Rs. 194.30 lakhs. There is also a proposal to construct 300 latrines at Pamba and 400 latrines along with 100 bathrooms at Sabrimala at the cost of Rs. 230.00 lakhs.

Solid waste collection and disposal arrangements in Sabrimala and Pamba will incur Rs. 250.00 lakhs. The important segment to abate pollution is segregation of existing drains and construction of new drains. This will be carried out at both the places at the cost of Rs. 126.95 lakhs. In another segment, mobile latrines will be constructed at Sabrimala and Pamba.

Interception Barriers of Sewage across Kakka thodu and Urakkuzhi Theertham in Pamba will cost Rs.25.00 lakhs. Construction of Storage weirs and allied works for Flushing the Pollutants one each in Pamba river and Kakki river, upstream of the confluence point in Pamba with fencing at Pollutant sources and storage shed for generator near weir will cost Rs. 86.25 lakhs. To prevent pollution of Njunajar river entering the bathing ghat at Pamba, construction of weir downstream of bathing ghat at Arattukadavu will take place. This will incur Rs 18.00 lakh.New bathing ghats will be erected at the cost of Rs 35.00 lakh.Rs 20 lakks will be spent to create public awareness.
