Surya Nepal Masters - 2008 Tees off

Surya Nepal Private Limited. and Nepal Professional Golfers Association with Nepal Tourism Board, Standard Chartered Bank Nepal Ltd & the Le Meridien Kathmandu Gokarna Forest Golf Resort & Spa announced that the 15th edition of Surya Nepal Masters, 2008 to be played at the Gokarna Forest Golf Resort & Spa from June 2-7, 2008.

Surya Nepal Masters 2008 is the flagship event of Nepal’s first professional golf tour which recently teed off with the Surya Nepal Central Open on 13th May 2008. Surya Nepal is grateful to Nepal Professional Golfers Association, Nepal Tourism Board & Standard Chartered for continuing to associate themselves with this effort to boost sports talent and tourism in the country. Surya Nepal Masters 2008 has had registrations from top professionals in India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka & Malaysia apart from Nepal. This year we are also having top amateurs from India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal playing as their country teams in the main event. This is a sure sign that golf in Nepal has come of age and events like this are in a position to attract the best of talent across the region.

Surya Nepal has been associated with this tournament since its inception in 1993, and today it is the biggest international professional golf tournament in Nepal with a prize purse of NRs 20 lakhs. This is Surya Nepal Khelparyatan’s endeavour towards continuing to invest in the growth & development of golf tourism and golfing talent in Nepal.

Surya Nepal Masters tees off at the par-72 Gokarna Forest Golf Resort & Spa on 3rd June 2008 with the Standard Chartered Pro Am. Pro Am is an opportunity for amateur golfers from the Corporate world & the Diplomatic Corps to rub shoulders with the very best professionals in the business. About 25 teams (1 pro and 3 amateurs will participate in the Standard Chartered Pro-Am.

Between 3rd June and 7th June 2008, the Surya Nepal Masters will witness the crème de la crème of golfers from India and other neighbouring nations along with host of top Nepali golfers. In the last edition of the tournament in 2007, history was created when for the first time in a Surya Nepal Masters event, Nepali professionals won the top 3 slots, with Deepak Thapa Magar emerging as the winner. This years event will witness 110 professionals and 15 amateurs (Including International teams), which includes our local professionals like Shiva Ram Shrestha, Deepak Thapa Magar, Deepak Acharya, Ramesh Nagarkoti, Deepak Neupane,Ravi Khadka, Sanjay Lama,Ram Thapa and others.

Ten Sports will cover the Surya Nepal Masters & broadcast it through a 60-minute capsule across South & South-East Asia to more than 400,000 golfers. This will not only showcase Golf in Nepal but also bring other tourist attractions to the frontline, and support the Nepal Tourism Board in its campaign “Naturally Nepal - once is not enough.”
