Thales today announced that it has been chosen by the Delhi Metro Railway Corporation (DMRC) to supply and install its advanced passenger information system (APIS) and Master Clock units in 74 metro stations across Delhi. The complete APIS solution will include the supply and installation of Passenger Information Display Systems (PIDS) and Public Address Systems (PAS) and allows for the automisation and optimisation of signalling and scheduling information. As a result, DMRC’s 700,000 daily passengers will benefit from a number of new features providing them with access to up-to-date service information.

The custom developed solutions contain a number of new features to provide greater passenger comfort such as LED and LCD screens and new state-of-the-art advertising space. The technology will also be deployed across two depots and two operational control centres in Delhi. With three stations already live, the contract is due for completion in 2010 in time for the Delhi Commonwealth Games. The new services will be ready for all tourists visiting the Games, while the advanced systems will continue to benefit local passengers over the long-term.

Thales was chosen by the DMRC through competitive bidding for the second phase of its metro. Also involved in Phase 1 of the Delhi metro system implementation, Thales already delivered transmission, radio, CCTV and a contactless smart card based automatic ticketing system for lines 1, 2 and 3 of the metro network.

Mr Raj Kumar, Operations Director of the Delhi Metro, commented: “Thales was an effective choice for this project due to its proven ability to provide advanced technical solutions and offer a commercially viable and trusted model. Additionally, Thales’ in-house customisation capabilities and enhanced product features mean that the solution is uniquely suited to the particular needs of the DMRC with the ability to upgrade the system as and when necessary.”

Mr Bruno Vazzoler, VP Managing Director Integrated Communication & Supervision Systems of Thales Transportation Systems said: “The existing Thales infrastructure and personnel on the ground in Delhi combined with our vast experience to deliver such large scale projects on time allowed us to offer an advanced solution. Our competitiveness in terms of price and technical capabilities is a key driver behind the success of this project and confirms our long-standing relationship with the DMRC.”

Thales was also awarded another contract to implement part of Phase 2 of the upgrade of Delhi Metro’s ticketing system, providing the network with entry and exit gates, ticketing machines and readers, as well as station computers by 2010.
