An Attestation Parade was held at The Ladakh Scouts Regimental Centre, Leh on 12 Jun 2021 to mark the entry of 90 recruits into the regiment as soldiers. A ceremony was conducted and reviewed by Major General Akash Kaushik, Chief of Staff, Fire and Fury Corps. The soldiers, hail from all across the union territory and took part in an oath taking ceremony pledging allegiance to the country and the army.
The Reviewing Officer congratulated them for the impressive parade and urged them to devote their life in service to the nation as proud soldiers of the Indian Army. He also complimented the parents of the new troops on having motivated their children to don the olive greens and exhorted the young Soldiers to continue to strive hard in pursuit of excellence and uphold the name of the regiment and its military traditions. The young Riflemen were awarded medals for their outstanding performance during training. “It was indeed a proud moment for the recruits who hail from far flung areas to join the Ladakh Scouts regiment as young soldiers,” said an official present at the ceremony.
The Ladakh Scouts were given the status of a full-fledged Indian army regiment specialised in mountain warfare with its own centre and Battalions on 1 June 2000. A year after India’s Independence from colonial rule, the ‘Nubra Guards’ were formed out of the local Ladakhi warriors. in 1948, in order to stave off intruders from across the border. In 1952, they formed the erstwhile 7th Battalion Jammu & Kashmir Militia. 14th Bn J&K Militia was subsequently raised in 1959 at Srinagar and both fought valiantly against the Chinese in the Sino-Indo conflict of 1962.
On 1 June 1963, Ladakh Scouts was raised by merging the 7th & 14th Bns J&K Militia. This merger paid dividends during the 1971 Indo-Pak war for the liberation of Bangladesh. The military outfit spearheaded a devastating attack in the Northern sector and was conferred the battle honour ‘TURTUK’ for the performance in combat. The period from 1982 to 1985 witnessed the reorganization of the Ladakh Scouts. The regiment plays a pivotal role in high altitude warfare.
