Cillian Murphy plays J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, in the first Oppenheimer movie image from Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film.

Oppenheimer was the chief of the Los Alamos Laboratory and oversaw the “Manhattan Project,” which developed the first nuclear weapons for World War II. In New Mexico, he also oversaw the Trinity Test, which saw the first atomic bomb successfully detonated.

After delivering enormous blockbusters like Interstellar, the Dark Knight trilogy, Justice League, and Inception, Nolan has become one of the very popular moviemakers in the world. After returning to action filmmaking for Tenet, the director’s next project is more akin to Dunkirk as the movie is based on the true story of the atomic bomb’s development.

Every day, it seems like a new A-lister joins Christopher Nolan’s ambitious upcoming film Oppenheimer, starring Cillian Murphy of Peaky Blinders as J. Robert Oppenheimer. In comparison to other upcoming films, Nolan’s Oppenheimer film has recruited one of the most fascinating casts in Hollywood. Cillian Murphy plays J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the nuclear bomb during World War II, in the movie, which marks the actor’s and director’s latest collaboration. Florence Pugh, Alden Ehrenreich, Emily Blunt, Rami Malek, Robert Downey Jr, Matt Damon, Dane DeHaan and others star in Oppenheimer. The lineup of acting talent in front of and behind the camera has rekindled the interest in Nolan’s upcoming movie, which is set to hit theatres in 2023.

Many of the cast members will be working with Nolan for the second time. Kenneth Branagh previously collaborated with the British director on Dunkirk and Tenet, and was recently nominated for many Academy Awards for his film Belfast. Murphy, on the other hand, appeared in all three Batman pictures, as well as Dunkirk and Inception. Damon appeared in Christopher Nolan’s 2014 sci-fi blockbuster Interstellar, and Stranger Things’ David Modine appeared in both, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, of the Batman series.

To commemorate the start of production on Nolan’s new film, Universal Pictures (via The Wrap) shared a black-and-white still of Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer. The image marks the first time IMAX cameras have been used to shoot black-and-white footage. Oppenheimer is described by Universal as a “epic thriller that thrusts audiences into the pulse-pounding dilemma of the enigmatic man who must risk destroying the planet in order to rescue it,” in addition to the image.

In February 2022, production began in New Mexico. “Oppenheimer” is Christopher Nolan’s 12th film and the sequel to “Tenet.” The film will have a theatrical window of about 100 days, up from the pre-pandemic standard of 90 days and significantly longer than the new 45-day window that is becoming the industry standard, according to Universal Pictures.

In a statement announcing the release date for “Oppenheimer,” Universal Filmed Entertainment Group Chairman Donna Langley said that films by Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas have pushed the boundaries of what a cinematic narrative can achieve and the Entertainment group is thrilled to be collaborating with them on this amazing and extraordinary project. Their shared enthusiasm for the theatrical experience is like no other.

Cillian Murphy’s first look as J. Robert Oppenheimer gives audiences a glimpse of how ideal he could be for the role. The actor bears a striking likeness to Oppenheimer in real life, but he appears to have slimmed down even more to capture the essence of the father of the atomic bomb. Oppenheimer’s signature is also the cigarette hanging from his mouth. He had a reputation for being a chain smoker, which led to his lung cancer later in life.

The movie’s black and white nature is an exciting unexpected surprise, on top of the amazing first look Oppenheimer image. It’s unclear how much of Oppenheimer will be shot in black and white, but it will be the first time that IMAX black and white analogue photography will be used in a movie. Given Nolan’s proclivity for messing with time in his films, it’s probable that earlier passages could be shot in black and white, while the “current” setting of Oppenheimer’s story may be shot in colour. In any event, it ensures that Nolan’s next film, which will be shot by Hoyte van Hoytema, will include a unique visual aesthetic once again.

Oppenheimer, which has a $100 million budget, is already in the early phases of development and will be released on July 21, 2023. Only time will show there is still a market for dark, powerful adult dramas in a society increasingly dominated by superhero movies and family fare. However, it does have an A-list roster on its side.
