The Central Railway has installed contactless COVID-19 scanners at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) railway stations. The thermal body scanner is also capable of detecting if the passenger has a face mask on and if the passenger maintains the social distance required. Since the Indian Railways has partially resumed passenger train services on important routes it is necessary to take measures to prevent the spread of COVID19 infection.

Currently, all passengers boarding Mail and Express trains at CSMT and LTT are being scanned by the thermal body scanner at the entry point before going inside the platform for boarding. All railway staff and officers on duty at these two major stations are also being screened through this AI (Artificial Intelligence) based camera.

The thermal screening system is real-time and automated for non-intrusive monitoring to ensure that a person entering doesn’t have a high fever. It is equipped with ‘Black Body’, a constant temperature source that ensures accuracy in temperature readings of up to 0.3 degree Celsius (+/-). The scanner measures the forehead temperature and has an accuracy +- 0.3 C with the black body.

The scanners heat sensors are designed to record heat generated by the body of a person or an object to create a 2D image with differing temperature levels. Anyone with a temperature above the set range will be shown in a different colour pattern than the rest on the computer screen connected to the cameras.

These thermal cameras can cover large areas resulting in detection of the temperature of multiple people entering at once at the premises and record temperature automatically while passengers keep on moving.
