Earlier this week, cyber hackers scammed a senior person who worked for the national government of Rs 1.14 crore. According to authorities, the scammers demanded Rs 4.5 lakh in exchange for access to his insurance funds but instead defrauded him.

S Prasad, a Trombay resident, filed a complaint with the East Region cyber police on Tuesday. The police have filed an FIR against nine people they believe are from outside the state.

Prasad received a call from a person claiming to be from the Central Government Employees Group Insurance Scheme (CGEGIS) on Monday, according to the police.

According to authorities, the caller told Prasad that if he paid Rs 4.5 lakh, he could take the money he had accumulated over the years of his employment. After Prasad made the money, he was called by several people who asked him to make additional payments under a variety of pretexts. He eventually paid the scammers Rs 1.14 crore before realising he had been tricked.

An FIR was filed against nine people, according to a senior officer, who spoke to the complainant under the names Anjali Verma, SN Mahapatra, Ravindra Das, and Rakesh Malhotra, among others. “We believe all of these are fake names,” the officer continued.

The calls to the complainant, according to the officer investigating the matter, were most likely made from another state. “The accused’s ability to gain access to the government’s database of services is a disturbing trend in such cases. Without access to the CGEGIS account, how would the suspects know the complainant had one?” the officer said.
