Indian Navy’s destroyer ship, INS Ranvijay caught fire on Saturday and flooding was reported onboard after returning from a regular exercise at the sea.

The ship was at the Visakhapatnam coast when the incident took place on Saturday night. However, the situation was later brought under control by the naval teams present in the situation as said by the officials of Eastern Naval Command.

Sailors Injured

Four sailors who were involved in the fire fighting process were left injured and are undergoing treatment at the naval hospital, INHS Kalyani while none of the admitted sailors is critical.

Though no major damages are being reported in the Indian Navy destroyer a Board of Inquiry has been ordered for investigating the cause of the incident.

INS Ranvijay

INS Ranvijay is a Rajput-class destroyer based at Visakhapatnam and was commissioned into the Indian Navy in 1988.

Earlier this year, the vessel had participated in the Malabar war games which involved Quad nations including India, Japan, Australia and the United States. The exercise had begun on October 12 off the Bay of Bengal. It was the 25th edition of the Malabar exercise which concluded on October 15.

INS Ranvijay has also participated in various maritime exercises including Simbex War Games and Indra War Games among others.

In the previous year, the Naval version of the BrahMos missile was successfully test-fired from the destroyer, hitting a decommissioned target ship in the Bay of Bengal, as part of a series of tests of the supersonic cruise missile.

This is not the first incident of fire on board a ship, a minor fire was also reported on India’s aircraft carrier, INS Vikramaditya in May. However, no major damage was reported while the sailors were rescued safely and the fire was brought under control.
