Indian’s who plan to drive while travelling abroad will be able to renew their International Driving Permit through the local Indian embassy or Mission Abroad portals.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has asked for suggestions for an amendment to Central Motor Vehicles Rules 1989 for facilitating the issuance of International Driving Permit for Indian citizens whose permit has expired while they are abroad.

“It has come to notice that in certain cases for the Citizens who are travelling abroad and in a foreign country, the International Driving Permit gets expired and there is no mechanism for its renewal while abroad.  The proposal is to amend the CMVR 1989 to facilitate such citizens.  The citizens can apply through the Indian Embassy / Mission Abroad portals and the applications would then move to the VAHAN for being considered by the respective RTOs (Road Transport Organisation),” states the Ministry release.

The Ministry also proposes to waive off the Medical Certificate and a Valid Visa clause at the time of making the request for the International Driving Permit.

As per the draft, as the citizen who has a valid driving licence, there should not be a requirement for another medical certificate.

In addition, an applicant may not have a visa for the countries that facilitate Visa is on arrival and in such case the visa is not available which is a required document for applying for International Driving Permit.
