Italian band Maneskin won the Eurovision 2021 song contest following a tight race from participants from 25 countries. The Italians won 524 points after a vote from the audience and the jury. The International Eurovision Song Contest, which was canceled in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, took place on May 18-22 at the Ahoy Arena in Rotterdam with 3,500 viewers watching the event live. Italy receives the right to host Eurovision in 2022 at home. The Netherlands won the right to host the competition after its singer Duncan Lawrence won the Eurovision Song Contest in 2019.
Måneskin is an Italian rock band that includes vocalist Damiano David, bassist Victoria De Angelis, guitarist Thomas Raji and drummer Ethan Torkio. In November 2017, the band released their debut single, Chosen. In 2021, they won the San Remo music festival with the song Zitti e Buoni, which they sang in the Eurovision Song Contest. The last time Italy won the Eurovision Song Contest was in 1990. This is Italy’s third gold in the event’s history.
“We just want to say, to the whole of Europe, to the whole world, rock ‘n’ roll never dies,” Maneskin’s frontman Damiano David said after the win. The winning Italian rock band Måneskin will release a new album before the end of this year, with a tour scheduled for December. “We are still working on a new album. We will release it by the end of the year, by December,” said bassist Victoria De Angelis at a press conference.
The second place was taken by France’s Barbara Pravy for song Voilà with 499 points. With 432 points, the third place went to the artist Gjon’s Tears from Switzerland with the song Tout l’Univers. British James Newman with song Embers received no points and was on the bottom of the table.
Eurovision is an annual song contest between the countries of the European Broadcasting Union. The competition has been held since 1956 and is one of the most popular non-sporting events in the world with an audience of up to 600 million viewers. Australia has taken part in the competition since 2015.
