Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai has announced her marriage to her fiancé Asser Malik in Great Britain. The Pakistani activist, who was wounded in the head by a Taliban hitman in 2012 for his campaign for the schooling of girls, revealed his wedding in a tweet. Yousafzai, now 24, said the ceremony, which was attended by family and friends, took place at her home in Birmingham.

“Today marks a precious day in my life. Asser and I tied the knot to be partners for life. We celebrated a small nikkah ceremony at home in Birmingham with our families. Please send us your prayers. We are excited to walk together for the journey ahead,” she wrote on her Twitter account.

Yousafzai became the youngest person ever to be awarded a Nobel Prize in 2014 for her commitment to the universal right to education for girls. Last year she graduated from Oxford University with a degree in philosophy, politics and economics.

The young activist also set up the Malala Fund, in support of education for girls around the world.
