The fourth-generation nuclear-powered missile cruiser Krasnoyarsk, built according to the improved Yasen-M project or the  Graney class for the Russian Navy, has been launched.

“The ceremony took place in Severodvinsk at the Sevmash enterprise on July 30,” the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement released on Friday.

The command for the roll out of the latest nuclear-powered submarine from the slipway was given by Sevmash CEO Mikhail Budnichenko, following which the sub’s future commander Captain 2nd Rank Ivan Artyushin traditionally smashed a bottle of champagne against the ship’s board.

Project 885M Yasen-M multipurpose nuclear submarines – carriers of Onyx and / or Kaliber cruise missiles. The Russnian Navy plans to arm them with Zircon hypersonic missiles, a new Russian hypersonic missile, which is being tested, developed by the Tactical Missile Armament Corporation.

The Yasen-M nuclear-powered missile cruiser Krasnoyarsk belongs to the fourth generation of nuclear-powered multipurpose submarines built to equip the Russian Navy’s Submarine Forces. The designer of the submarine is St. Petersburg Marine Engineering Bureau “Malakhit”.  On 23 January 2017, it had successfully completed hydraulic pressure hull tests.

The Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy Nikolai Evmenov noted at the launching ceremony of the Krasnoyarsk submarine that “the Russian ocean-going navy will be provided with the most modern and reliable nuclear submarines of the Yasen-M project in the long term.

The replenishment of the Submarine Forces with these boats “clearly demonstrates the stage of active equipping of our Navy with submarines and ships that have no analogues in the world,” noted Evmenov, quoted by the press service of the Russian Defense Ministry.

“This will allow the Russian Navy to continue to effectively carry out the tasks of guaranteed prevention of any threats to the security of the state from sea and ocean directions,” the Commander-in-Chief of the Navy said.

He expressed confidence that “the pace of construction of nuclear submarines of this project taken by the Sevmash enterprise will allow them to be transferred to the Navy in the planned time frame with invariably high quality.”

Yasen-M is an improved design of Yasen design. Severodvinsk is the only example of Yasen design. Yasen-M series include Kazan (accepted by the Russian Navy),  Novosibirsk (under sea trials),  Krasnoyarsk,  Arkhangelsk,  Perm,  Ulyanovsk,  Voronezh,  Vladivostok
