Powai’s Lion’s Club has adopted the public toilet opposite the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B) Main Gate, under the IIT skywalk in Powai. The toilet is next to the traffic outpost, where police personnel enforce traffic rules on the busy IIT road. The adoption of the toilet was carried out under the aegis of club president Kapildeo Singh and (member) Bhavani Shankar Sharma.

The toilet was renovated and opened on 28 March 2021 for public use. The inauguration was spearheaded by Shrinivas Tripathi, the Nominated Corporator of Ward 122 and club members Dr Triloki Mishra, Priyadev Sreemanglam, Ashok Singh and Ashutosh Shrivastava. The only public toilet in the vicinity of the IIT-B Main Gate was unusable and subsequently abandoned prompting the adoption and renovation of the public toilet.

The areas surrounding IIT-B Main Gate are usually immensely crowded and bustling with activities resulting in the lack of public toilet access. People are reported to have had to walk 10-15 minutes to travel to nearby Chetan Nagar for the sake of accessing a public toilet. “This problematic situation was curbed with the efforts of the Lion’s Club of Powai under the leadership of our Corporator,” said a Lions Club member.

“The efforts taken for the social cause will now help a lot of people who won’t have to travel to IIT Market place in order to access a public toilet. This not only has made things easy for locals, but also for visitors,” added the member. The toilet is situated under the public skywalk of IIT-B Main Gate, Powai, behind the police beat chowki.
