Russia is conducting missile exercises in the Sea of Japan from 7 to 9 July.  Russia is in the process of strengthening its military presence in the Sea of Japan. The Russians had carried out joint patrol overflights of the water area of this sea in July 2019 and in 2020 December with the participation of Russian and Chinese bombers, as well as deploying air defense and missile defense systems on the Kuril Islands.

Earlier, the Secretary General of the Japanese Cabinet of Ministers Katsunobu Kato said that the country’s authorities are closely monitoring the military activity of Russia in the border areas and urge Moscow to fully ensure the safety of Japanese shipping in connection with the data on the planned rocket firing.

Russia is also monitoring the French reconnaissance ship FS Dupuy de Lôme (A759) in the Sea of Japan.

“The forces and means of the Eastern Military District exercise control over the Dupuy de Lôme reconnaissance ship operating from July 5 2021 in the waters of the Sea of Japan and the Tatar Strait,” said the Russian MoD.

It is generally known that Fs Dupuy de Lôme is equipped with equipment that is capable of intercepting modern types of transmissions, including e-mail messages and conversations on mobile phones. This ship has been spotted in the Black Sea in  2006, 2010, 2014, 2015, and 2019. The vessel was commissioned in April 2006. Capable of traveling at 16 knots, the ship crew consists of 30 sailors and 80 operators of intelligence equipment. It is built by Niestern Sander located in Delfzijl, the Netherlands.
