Russia called for the return of U.S. nuclear weapons from non-nuclear countries to its own territory. The infrastructure for their deployment in Europe must be eliminated, said Dmitry Polyansky, the First Deputy Representative of Russia to the UN, at a meeting of the UN Disarmament Commission.

U.S. keeps nuclear weapons, about 150 B61 tactical thermonuclear aerial bombs, in six of Europes military bases in five European countries, including Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy and Turkey. Turkey straddles Asia and Europe.

“In violation of the obligations under the NPT (Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons – ed.), American non-strategic nuclear weapons are preserved on the territory of certain non-nuclear European countries, such weapons and their delivery vehicles are being modernized, and the so-called “joint nuclear missions” of NATO continue, which assume the involvement of non-nuclear members of the alliance in training in the handling of nuclear weapons and their use,” Polyansky said.

“It is necessary to stop this practice, return nuclear weapons to the national territory of their owner and eliminate the infrastructure for their deployment in Europe,” he said.

He also called on the U.S. to abandon its plans to deploy ground-based intermediate and shorter-range missiles in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.

“Let us recall that the Pentagon continues to implement decisions on the deployment of ground-based INF missiles in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. We again urge Washington to show prudence and abandon such plans,” Polyansky said.

Poland’s willingness to deploy Nuclear weapons

Later talking to reporters, Peskov, commenting on Poland’s readiness to deploy nuclear weapons, said the leadership of Poland has been causing concern lately; it is anti-Russian and militant, and this could lead to increased tension.

Polish Deputy Prime Minister, Chairman of the National Security and Defense Committee Jaroslaw Kaczynski, said in an interview with Welt am Sonntag that Poland is ready to host U.S. nuclear weapons.

“In general, the line of the Polish leadership has been causing deep concern lately: the line is extremely militant, anti-Russian, and the proposed actions, of course, can only lead to a further increase in tension on the continent,” Peskov said, replying to the question whether this is a cause for concern for Moscow and how Russia can influence attempts to place nuclear weapons in Poland.

Responding to a similar question, a member of the State Duma Committee on Security and Anti-Corruption, Adalbi Shkhagoshev, had told the media that Poland intends to carve up Ukraine with a claim to expand its own territory.

“For some reason, they believe that the time is approaching when they will divide the territory of Ukraine. And Poland’s claims to the territory of Ukraine, to which part, are understandable – the western part.”

No use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine

Polyansky also ruled out the possibility of using nuclear weapons in the situation with Ukraine.

“Contrary to the fabrications voiced today, Russia’s use of nuclear potential is possible only in response to the use of nuclear and other types of WMD (weapons of mass destruction – ed.) against it and/or its allies or in the event of aggression against our country with the use of conventional weapons, when under threat the very existence of the state has been set,” Polyansky said at a meeting of the UN Disarmament Commission.

As per Polyansky, “these criteria can in no way be applied to the scenario currently unfolding in Ukraine.” Polyansky said Russia firmly adheres to the principle that there can be no winners in a nuclear war, and it should not be unleashed.

AUKUS and Arms Race

The Deputy Representative stressed that AUKUS impacts the nuclear nonproliferation agreements.

“We believe that this partnership provokes tension in the field of international security, forms the prerequisites for the start of a new round of the arms race, and not only in the Asia-Pacific region,” Polyansky said.
