The CSTM Herbal Garden has 120 Medicinal Plants on display

In an effort to create an environmentally cordial atmosphere for passengers, the Central Railway has initiated numerous “green initiatives” across its zone. One such endeavour is the Herbal Garden, at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSTM), spearheaded by its Mumbai Division. The CSTM Herbal Garden is located near Heritage Gully, towards the entrance, platform number 18 and has been described by officials as “Boasting of a collection approximately 120 different species of herbal plants and shrubs, the garden is definitely one of its kind.”

According to Railway authorities, plants on display include:

Ashwagandha: A herb used to treat diseases like leprosy, nervous disorders, venereal diseases, rheumatism and used as a tonic for all kinds of weakness and to promote vigor and vitality.

Bramhi: A herb used to treat psychological ailments such as epilepsy, insanity, and memory loss.

Evening Primrose: The oil of which is often used as a dietary supplement, for cosmetic purposes and for the treatment of atopic eczema in the premenstrual syndrome.

Menthol Mint: Used widely for flavouring toothpastes, mouth washes and in cosmetic preparation. It is also used in medicines like pain balm, analgesic creams, and cough syrups.

The garden also houses, Adusa, Ajwain, Apamarg, Elachi, Pepper, Shatavari, Tulsi among other herbs commonly used in the cure of the common cold; Anjeer, Turmeric, Insulin, Gudmar, Tej patta used to counteract the effects of diabetes, and includes other medical plants like Bringraj, Sarpa gandha, Giloi, Clove which are potent against numerous other ailments.

These plants are known for the plethora of health benefits such as decreasing blood pressure, prevention of cardiovascular diseases, or reducing the risk of cancer. In addition to its effects on enhancing biodiversity, these plants also help in increasing the oxygen level and reduce pollution.

The organisation in its statement on this development said, “The Central Railway has always been at the forefront of preserving and nurturing nature and its horticulture department has been the winner of several awards and trophies in various plants and flowers exhibitions. This initiative is another important step towards a greener and healthy Railway.”
