In the statement made by the Tamil Nadu authorities, it was stated that water was evacuated from the streets in flood caused by heavy rain, but low areas could be flooded once again.

Officials, who called on citizens not to go out, stated that at least 14 people died in the floods, and 800 huts were damaged.

In the news in the local press, it was noted that more than 100 aid centres were established, and free food was distributed for those affected by the heavy rain.

Rains to reduce

Heavy Rains over Tamil Nadu and Andhra are likely to decrease from tomorrow as the Depression enters into land today and weakens subsequently. Today’s rainfall activity will move over Andhra Pradesh, said the India Meteorological Department a few hours back.

Flights to Chennai suspended

It was reported that flights to Chennai, the capital of the most affected state by the flood, were stopped.

Education was suspended in many districts, including Chennai, Madurai, Kanchi and Chengalpattu, on November 9 due to heavy rains.

More than 500 people were evacuated and placed in temporary shelters due to heavy rains that hit Chennai and its neighbouring areas.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said in a statement yesterday that precipitation may also be mild to moderate in the south coast of Kerala and Andhra Pradesh for the next five days.

Some social media users said the situation was as dire as the 2015 floods, which killed more than 200 people in the state.

Experts say that although the city often encounters heavy rains at this time of year, uncontrolled development and poor urban planning lead to destruction and chaos, while climate change caused by global warming also contributes to the problem, making excessive precipitation more likely and more frequent.
