Upgraded Kilo, Project 636.3 submarine Magadan in Baltic Sea for sea trials

Project 636.3 submarine Magadan, the upgraded Kilo class submarine, entered the Baltic Sea on 27th June for factory sea trials. As per the Russian Ministry of Defence,  the tests of the diesel-electric submarine “Magadan” will last 20 days.

Magadan, the third submarine of the series being built at the Admiralty Shipyards for the Russian Pacific Fleet, was launched on March 26 this year in a high (91%) degree of readiness.

The first ship, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, was handed over to the Russian Navy on November 25, 2019. The Volkhov submarine, the second in the series, entered the Pacific Fleet on October 24, 2020.

These boats are being built under a contract for six submarines for the Pacific Fleet signed with the MoD in September 2016. Ufa is the fourth boat,

Project 636.3 submarines are equipped with Kalibr cruise missiles ( developed by the Novator OKB, Almaz-Antey Concern VKO JSC ).

The upgraded Kilo class submarines have an endurance of 45 days, can dive at a maximum depth of 300 m. The submerged cruising range using economical speed is 400 miles. The cruising range with the snorkel and enhanced fuel supply at a speed of 7 knots is 7,500 miles. The surface displacement is 2,350 cbm and the submerged displacement is 4000 tons. The submarine has 6 torpedo tubes. The underwater speed is18 knots and carries a complement of 52.

Admiralteiskie Verfi JSC is a key enterprise of shipbuilding, a centre of the conventional submarine building of Russia. The shipyard is affiliated with the United Shipbuilding Corporation.
