On 26th July, Monday, BS Yediyurappa announced his resignation from the post of Chief Minister of Karnataka and broke down into tears. Earlier on Saturday, Yediyurappa had said that whether he would continue as the CM or not would be known by Monday. The 78-year-old leader had further said that he would continue to work for the BJP for the next 10-15 years.

He has said that I have decided to resign. “I will meet the governor in the afternoon,” Yeddyurappa said. Getting emotional he said that after lunch, he will submit his resignation to the governor.

Yeddyurappa had reached Delhi to meet with senior BJP leaders including PM Narendra Modi and the discussion of changing the CM intensified in the state. Yeddyurappa is a four-time Chief Minister and veteran leader of the Lingayat community. BJP is reportedly keen to superannuate the 77 year old Yediyurappa  and appoint an acceptable leader in his place well before the 2023 assembly polls.

It is being said that by replacing Yeddyurappa and giving the command of the state to a leader of another community, the BJP may suffer in the next elections in Karnataka.’

While political experts believe that this decision of the BJP is likely to affect the BJP’s position in Karnataka, BJP national president JP Nadda on Sunday denied any political crisis in Karnataka and said that Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa has done a good job. He said that Yediyurappa is handling things in his own way.

Murugesh Nirani can be the replacement for Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa. His sudden visit to Delhi has indicated a change in the politics of Karnataka. He says that this is his personal journey. The meeting with many senior BJP leaders during this visit might be indicating something else. Nirani is also the chairman of Nirani Group of industries.

“I never lobbied for any post in my life. I will shoulder the responsibility bestowed on me by the party. Our national leaders will choose the right person for the CM post after considering all the factors,” Nirani said recently.

Pralhad Joshi, C T Ravi, Basavaraj S Bommai, Arvind Bellad, Jagadish Shettar, Vishveshwar Hegde Kageri and CN Ashwath Narayan are also in the race.
