Parthasarathy Sudarshan, 47, the owner of an international electronics business, was sentenced today in the District of Columbia to 35 months in prison for his role in a conspiracy to illegally export controlled electronic components to government entities in India that participate in the development of ballistic missiles, space launch vehicles, and fighter jets.
On March 13, 2008, Sudarshan, a resident of Simpsonville, South Carolina, pleaded guilty in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia to the felony charge of conspiracy to violate the International Emergency Economic Powers Act and the Export Administration Regulations; and to violate the Arms Export Control Act and the International Traffic in Arms Regulations. Sudarshan was sentenced today by the Honorable Ricardo Urbina.

The International Conference on “The New Business Laws of India” hosted by the International Indian Bar Association (IIBA) was organized in New Delhi on May 9-10, 2008. The event was aimed at discussing one of the most pertinent issues of the legal sector: Should India open its legal services sector? and the pros and cons. IIBA’s first ever conference in India was inaugurated by Mr. Ashok Desai, Former Attorney General of India and included working sessions on Competition Law, Limited Liability Partnership and Companies Amendment Bill.

The Ministry of Rural Development has decided to constitute an Expert Group under the Chairmanship of Prof. Moolchand Sharma, Vice-Chairman University Grants Commission for examining institutional mechanisms for the establishment of Ombudsman under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA). The other members of the group include Shri Ram Lubhaya, Principal Secretary, Rural Development, Government of Rajasthan, Shri S.M. Vijayanad, Secretary, Rural Development, Government of Kerala, Shri K. Raju Principal Secretary Rural Development Government of Andhra Pradesh, Shri Ashk Ali Tak, Member CEGC and Dr. B.D. SHARMA Member CGEC. In addition , the Joint Secretary (NREGA) Ministry of Rural Development and representative from the ministry of Law and Justice, Ministry of Labour and Employment, Panchayati Raj and Chief Vigilance Commission will be the others members of the Expert Group.

The Supreme Court today dismissed and refused to entertain a Public Interest Litigation filed against the use of the name “Royal Challengers” for the Bangalore team in the Indian Premier League matches.
The Public Interest Litigation had been filed on the ground that the name ‘Royal Challengers’ and the use of the logo and phrase ‘game for life’ indirectly promotes the liquor brand “Royal Challenge”. It was also prayed that ‘Royal Challengers’ be restrained from participating in the Indian Premier League matches or play under a different name.

The Law Commission in its 120th Report recommended that the strength of judges per million population may be increased from 10.5 to 50 judges. The present judge strength in India is 14 per million population (approx.). Government has already increased the Judge strength in the High Courts by 152.
With regard to subordinate judiciary, the Supreme court, in its judgement of 21st March, 2002, in All India Judges’ Association & Ors Vs. Union of India & Ors., directed that an increase in the Judge strength from the existing 10.5 per 10 lakh people to 50 judges per 10 lakh people should be effected and implemented within a period of five years in a phased manner to be determined and directed by the Union Ministry of Law. India proposes to computerize the lower courts in future. A scheme for computerization of all the 13000 District and Subordinate Courts, prepared in accordance with the National Policy and Action Plan has been approved by the Government on 8th February, 2007 with National Informatics Centre (NIC) as the implementing agency. The coverage of the project includes Information and Communication Technology (ICT) enablement of all the District and Subordinate Courts and upgrading the ICT infrastructure of the Supreme Court and all the High Courts.
The project is to be implemented in three phases over a period of five years. The first phase, which is under implementation, is scheduled to be completed in two years.

CBI on Wednesday filed a chargesheet against former Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) officer Maj Gen (Retd) V K Singh, the author of the book “India’s External Intelligence: Secrets of RAW.” The chargesheet has been filed against him for divulging “top secret” information in his book which alleged corruption in India`s external intelligence agency.
Even the publisher of the book — India`s external intelligence, Secrets of RAW — Vivek Garg has also been named in the chargesheet. The chargesheet has been filed under the pretext of two different sections of the Officials Secrets Act, 1923, in the court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate here.

In a major boost to reservation, the Supreme Court today upheld the Constitution amendment law providing for 27 per cent quota for OBCs in IITs, IIMs and other Central educational institutions but excluded the creamy layer from the benefit.
A five-judge Constitution bench by a unanimous verdict cleared the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Act, 2006 providing for the quota.
The bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan excluded the creamy layer among the OBCs from the quota benefit.
