The Aviastar aircraft facility in Ulyanovsk is experiencing a major rise in production capacity and workforce, signaling the beginning of a new phase of expansion in Russia’s aviation industry. The factory, which is a branch of the Ilyushin aviation company within the United Aircraft Corporation, is in the process of increasing the production of both existing and tuture military transport aircraft.

The workforce at the facility has already doubled, from approximately 7,000 employees to approximately 13,000, as part of a long-term initiative to improve aircraft production capabilities, according to regional authorities. The growth is associated with an ambitious program that involves the expansion of existing aircraft production and the preparation for the assembly of new transport models, including the Il-276 medium military transport aircraft and the Il-100 heavy strategic transport aircraft, which are occasionally referred to as the “Slon.”

The developments indicate a major industrial attempt that is designed to modernize Russia’s military transport fleet and strengthen its domestic aviation sector.

Aviastar: One of Russia’s Largest Aircraft Manufacturing Facilities

One of the most prominent aviation production facilities in Russia is the Aviastar complex in Ulyanovsk. The facility, which was established during the late Soviet era, has a long history of producing large transport aircraft and has been instrumental in the assembly of some of the most recognizable aviation platforms in the country.

Among the aircraft built at the facility are the Tu-204 passenger airliner and the Il-76 heavy transport aircraft. Aviastar also developed a close relationship with the production and maintenance of the An-124 “Ruslan,” one of the world’s largest cargo aircraft, as time progressed.

Continued Production of the Il-76MD-90A

Since its introduction in the 1970s, the Il-76 family has been one of the most commonly used military transport aircraft worldwide. The aircraft, which was intended to transport heavy equipment and personnel to remote regions, has been used by both military and civilian operators in Europe, Asia, and Africa.

The upgraded Il-76MD-90A variant includes an array of improvements in comparison to its predecessors. These consist of modern digital avionics, reinforced wing structures, increased payload capacity, and new PS-90A-76 turbofan engines.

The Multirole Transport Aircraft program, a joint Russian-Indian initiative, was the initial concept for the aircraft. The development of a modern medium transport aircraft was initiated in the early 2000s as a joint effort between Russia and India.

Nevertheless, the partnership ultimately ended in 2015, and Russia subsequently pursued the initiative independently.

The Il-276 is intended to bridge the distance between light tactical transports and heavy strategic airlifters, such as the Il-76. It is anticipated that it will supplant a number of Soviet-era aircraft, such as the An-12, An-26, and An-72.

The aircraft is expected to be capable of transporting paratroopers or specialized military equipment, as well as carrying up to 20 tons of cargo over distances of approximately 2,000 kilometers.

The aircraft’s design features consist of a high-wing configuration that is appropriate for rough airfields, two turbofan engines mounted beneath the wings, and a cargo compartment that is similar in cross-section to the Il-76 but shorter in length.

The Il-276 has the potential to expand its market beyond Russia, notably among countries that are in search of a medium transport aircraft with relatively low operating costs, according to industry experts.

The Il-100 “Slon”: Russia’s Future Heavy Transport Aircraft

The Il-100, which is commonly referred to by its conceptual name “Slon,” which translates to “Elephant” in Russian, is another aircraft that is scheduled for production at Aviastar.

This aircraft is indicative of a considerably more ambitious undertaking. It is intended to replace the aging An-124 Ruslan, one of the largest cargo aircraft presently in service, with a super-heavy transport aircraft.

The Il-100 is currently in the conceptual or early development phase; however, its expected specifications suggest that it has the potential to become one of the largest aircraft built in Russia.

The aircraft’s design conceptions indicate that it could operate at a cruise speed of approximately 850 kilometers per hour, transport a cargo load of 150 to 180 tons, and travel distances of up to 7,000 kilometers.

The aircraft would be powered by four next-generation PD-35 turbofan engines, which are presently in the process of development, if the project is completed as planned.

This aircraft would establish Russia as one of the few nations that are capable of manufacturing strategic heavy transport aircraft, a category that is currently dominated by aircraft such as the American C-5 Galaxy and the Ukrainian-designed An-124.
