The police in Chunabhatti arrested four people on Friday for allegedly robbing a cab driver on the Sion Trombay highway.
According to the police, a group of five people allegedly threatened the driver with a knife and demanded money early Thursday. They pepper-sprayed the driver’s eyes and took his cash and valuables when he refused. Gaurav Dhanwate (20), Krishna Maghade (19), Mayur Nikum (20), and Mehul Jadhav (20) were detained (18). The fifth suspect is still on the loose.
According to the police, the five allegedly booked a cab from Byculla and asked the driver, Lalit Sarjuprasad Tiwari, to drop them off at Mulund. Midway, one of the defendants stated that he needed to answer nature’s call and requested Tiwari stop the cab.
“As soon as they came to a halt, one of them drew a knife and demanded cash and valuables. He resisted and pushed them away but was stabbed in the hand as a result,” explained one of the officers. The five then pepper-sprayed his eyes, stole his money and phone, and left.
An officer stated, “Our patrolling cops saw the victim crying in pain.” They called reinforcements and followed the suspect.
