The Reutov NPO Mashinostroyenia has begun to fulfil a contract for the serial production of Zircon hypersonic cruise missiles for the Russian Navy; TASS reports this with reference to a source close to the military department.
“The serial production of Zircons is already underway at NPO Mashinostroyenia, although state tests of this product from a surface carrier will continue,” the agency’s source said.
The rocket currently has no analogues in the world. It can carry out a long aerodynamic flight with manoeuvring in dense layers of the atmosphere, using the thrust of its engine along the entire route.
The Zircon hypersonic missiles will begin to enter service with the Russian Navy in 2022.
Earlier, Frigate “Admiral Gorshkov” performed the hypersonic missile “Zircon” test and hit the target in the White Sea. The Zircon was launched as part of the ongoing test cycle of hypersonic missile weapons. The rocket’s flight corresponded to the specified parameters and scored a direct hit on the target as per the media.
