No Damage And Loss Of Life Reported In Today’s Earthquake In A & N Islands

There are no reports of any damage and loss of life in the earthquake, which hit the Andaman and Nicobar (A&N) Islands at 1710 hrs. today. However, Dy. Commissioners in A&N Islands have been asked to closely watch the situation until tomorrow evening. No tsunami is likely due to earthquake. The Secretary (Border Management) in the Ministry of Home Affairs, spoke to the Lt. Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands about the situation.

A earthquake of 6.7 magnitude had its epicenter 113 km west of Port Blair.

Defence Minister asks Govt and security forces to ensure ‘peaceful, free and fair polls in J&K

The Defence Minister AK Antony today asked the state government officials and security forces to make all efforts to ensure ‘peaceful, free and fair elections’ in the state of Jammu & Kashmir which goes to the polls later this year. Antony, who is on a two- day visit to the state, chaired a meeting with the Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad in Srinagar, where a review of the security situation in the state and progress made on the Recommendations of the Expert Panel Committee was held. Antony said the coming months are going to be crucial as there are forces within and outside the state which will make efforts to thwart the process of holding elections in J&K.

Antony complimented the security forces for their sacrifice and determined efforts which has helped in bringing down the level of militancy related violence not only in the valley but also in the state. He called upon the security forces to achieve the objective of neutralizing the militants with minimum inconvenience to the people. In this regard, he also asked the security forces to vacate all remaining public buildings and ensure that human rights are not violated in the process.

Bihar And MP Propelling India’s Telecom Growth Revolution

India, the second largest telecom market in the world is deriving its growth in subscribers base from the otherwise underdeveloped states of Bihar and Madhya Pradesh. The state of Bihar registered maximum increase in annual telecom subscribers, registering a growth of 88.2 per cent in the previous fiscal as compared to the 51.1 per cent in FY 2006-07, according to ASSOCHAM Eco Pulse (AEP).

According to the AEP, State-wise analysis of Mobile Subscription, keeping aside Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai, the states like Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, North East region and Orissa have registered an upsurge, thanks to the major players entering into the unexplored markets in India and expanding their operations.

Orissa Leads States With Capex Of Rs. 92,035 Crore Lined Up In Q4

India Inc. lined up investment plans of almost Rs. 92,035 crore in Orissa during Jan-Mar 2008, with Rs. 45,000 crore flowing to steel sector alone, state the readings of ASSOCHAM Investment Meter (AIM).

According to the AIM study on “Statewise Investments”, Orissa topped the chart claiming almost 30 per cent of the total investments announced during the last quarter of 2007-08 totaling to Rs. 3,25,285 crore. West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh followed with the capex announcements of nearly Rs. 67,361 crore and Rs. 58,226 crore.

Union Cabinet revokes Presidents rule in Karnataka

The Union Cabinet has decided to ask the President of India to revoke the proclamation issued on 20th November 2007, under clause (2) of Article 356 of the Constitution of India placing the State of Karnataka under President’s Rule.

The presidents rule was imposed as the Karnataka state political parties were unable to form a government due to fractured mandate in last elections. This time the BJP emerged the largest party with 110 seats in state assembly polls.

BJP’s stunning victory in Karnataka

The Bharatiya Janta Party today for the first time planted its victory in a southern Indian state. It is stunning that BJP is on the verge of winning 111 seats, just two short of the 113 required for a simple majority. A euphoric Lal Krishna Advani said “I had stated that 2008 would turn out to be a ‘Year of Change’ in national politics. My affirmation has been vindicated by the triumphant performance of the BJP in the Vidhan Sabha elections in Karnataka.”

Karnataka victory comes after the BJP’s decisive victories in the Vidhan Sabha elections in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh towards the end of 2007

Karnataka goes to poll today

The first phase of assembly elections in Karnataka began today with 89 constituencies spread over 11 districts on the vote block. In addition to BJP, Congress and JD(S), there will be parties like the Janapara Rajakeeya Ranga and emerging party like the BSP.

Today voting takes place in districts of Mysore, Tumkur, Bangalore Urban, Chikkaballapur, Kolar, Bangalore Rural, Hassan, Ramanagara, Chamarajanagar, Mandya and Kodagu, .

Nagaland annual plan 2008-09 finalized

The Annual Plan outlay for Nagaland for the year 2008-09 was approved today at a meeting between the Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission, Shri Montek Singh Ahluwalia and Chief Minister of Nagaland, Shri Neiphiu Rio. The Annual Plan size was agreed at Rs.1200 crores. This includes additional Central assistance of Rs.150 crores for projects of importance to the State.

Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission, Mr. Montek Singh Ahluwalia complimented the State Government for achievements during Tenth Plan period as well as in the first year of the Eleventh Plan. He said despite constraints, the State has been achieving good growth rates. Plan realization is also good. The State Government was also complimented for achievements in the social sector particularly health and education. (more…)
