India to be World’s Third-Largest Domestic Airline Market in 2023, behind US and China

-

Up to the year 2016, the domestic airline market in Brazil was significantly larger than the one in India. It has around fifty per cent more seating capacity than it did back then. In 2017, Japan’s domestic airline market was significantly larger than India’s. Indian airline market has grown by almost 25 per cent since last year.

When the Covid issue was going on, all three markets went into a steep drop. The capacity, on the other hand, is expanding rapidly once more. India, as determined by Cirium Diio and total domestic scheduled seat capacity, will rank as the third largest domestic airline market globally in the current year, trailing only the United States and China. Europe would be the only other dominant market if its internal flights were considered “domestic.” If you count flights within Europe as “domestic,” then Europe is the only other market that might be considered larger.

This data does not include data for foreign flights, an area in which India’s expansion has been more gradual. Despite this, it is possible that business would perk up as a revitalised Air India grows its widebody fleet. IndiGo has become India’s largest airline by a significant margin, and the company has plans to boost domestic seat capacity by an additional 19% this year. The domestic market is where IndiGo first made its name. This year, the airline anticipates a thirty per cent increase in its domestic seat capacity compared to 2019. Additionally, it is expanding globally, although with smaller aircraft.
