Legal Notice Issued to Mamata Banerjee Regarding Statements on ‘The Kashmir Files’ and Upcoming Bengal Genocide Film

Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri issued a legal notice Tuesday to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee regarding her comments on his 2022 hit film ‘The Kashmir Files.

Following comments made by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee about his 2022 blockbuster film ‘The Kashmir Files and his upcoming film based on the Bengal genocide, filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri said to ANI on Tuesday that he had sent her a legal notice. In his claim, Banerjee referred to his films as propaganda and said the BJP funded them. It was in response to these statements that Agnihotri sent the legal notice.

He stated that only he is aware of his challenges over the past year, as politicians, journalists, and self-proclaimed fact-checkers have tried to silence him. Additionally, Agnihotri noted that some communal fact-checkers had taken his daughter’s Instagram image and circulated it shamelessly.

When ‘The Kashmir Files’ was released in 2022, critics accused it of promoting a communal agenda by chronicling the 1990 exodus of Kashmiri Pandits.

In her announcement regarding the ban on ‘The Kerala Story’ in Bengal, Mamata Banerjee referred to ‘The Kashmir Files’ and stated that it aimed to humiliate a particular community. In addition, she described ‘The Kerala Story’ as a distorted narrative.

Banerjee clarified that her comments did not support the Communist Party of India (Marxist), as she believed the party had collaborated with the BJP. According to her, it was the BJP that was promoting the film.
Trinamool Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party have been embroiled in a major political controversy over the Bengal government’s ban on “The Kerala Story” directed by Sudipto Sen.

Dilip Ghosh, vice-president of the BJP, said ‘The Kerala Story’ decries terrorism and ISIS. Their strategies and methods are revealed in the film. In addition, Ghosh alleged that the Trinamool Congress party banned the film to appease a particular section of the minority community.

Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of Bengal, announced on Monday that the controversial film “The Kerala Story” would be banned in the state due to fears that it might cause unrest. In addition, she expressed concern that the BJP might be funding a Bengal-related film similar to Kashmir Files.

According to her, posters with the phrase ‘Save Bengal’ were being circulated, defaming the state. Considering Bengal as a peaceful and peace-loving state, she questioned why the BJP indulged in communal politics.
