Philippine Offshore Patrol Vessels Built by Hyundai to Receive Hanwha Combat System

-

Hanwha Systems Co., the defence and ICT unit of South Korea’s Hanwha Group, announced on Friday that it had obtained a $34.5 million contract to supply the Philippine Navy with its combat management system (CMS).

According to a press statement issued by the firm with headquarters in Seoul, Hanwha’s indigenous combat system will be installed on six 2,400-ton offshore patrol vessels as part of an agreement with a price tag of $29.5 million. The Philippine Navy is scheduled to receive the OPVs between 2024 and 2028.

Also included in the contract is the $5 million export of the standard digital communications system, also known as the tactical data link.

A combat management system (CMS) serves as the vessel’s brain. It is intended to consolidate all of the equipment—including sensors, weaponry, and communication systems—into a single system so that the vessel can respond more effectively to threats while engaged in combat.

The latest arrangement increases the number of Philippine naval ships equipped with Hanwha’s CMS to thirteen.

Since 2017, Hanwha Systems has secured multiple CMS supply contracts with the Philippine Navy, including contracts for two patrol combat corvettes and five frigates.

Hanwha Systems stated that it intends to participate in the Philippine Navy’s vessel modernisation initiative.
