In March of 2023, the aircraft production firm anticipates installing engines on Sukhoi Superjet New (SSJ-New) aircraft. Mikhail Degtyarev, the governor of the Khabarovsk Territory, stated in an interview with TASS that the Sukhoi Superjet New (SSJ-New) has yet to be shipped because of the transition to local engines. On the other hand, manufacturing workers in Komsomolsk-on-Amur are responsible for the groundwork, which includes the construction of aircraft bodies. According to Degtyarev, the number of deliveries will increase by 2023 beginning in March. This, of course, is dependent on the fact that everything will go according to plan and that they will be able to start installing engines and delivering planes to clients.

He said that following the agreement reached between the United Aircraft Corporation and Aeroflot during the most recent Eastern Economic Forum, it is planned to deliver 89 SSJ-New aircraft between 2023 and 2030.

The SSJ New aircraft is an iteration of the Superjet 100 aircraft, which belongs to the family of aircraft classified as regional aircraft. The SSJ New aircraft features maximum import replacement of components and systems. Following the imposition of Western sanctions on Russia, the project to develop the Superjet New was initiated by the Ministry of Industry and Trade. In conjunction with the import substitution of components, there will be an increase in the number of processes, notably those associated with the dependability of the system, comfort, safety, and airworthiness maintenance.

Model SSJ-NEW with PD-8 engines successfully passed tests in the TsAGI transonic tunnel

The Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade announced on November 30, 2022, that the Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute, named after N.E. Zhukovsky (TsAGI), has finished testing the SSJ-NEW short-haul aircraft model using Russian PD-8 engines. It was claimed that the configuration of the SSJ-NEW with the PD-8 engine has the same aerodynamic quality as with the original SaM-146 engine.

The PowerJet SaM146 is a turbofan engine that is manufactured by the joint venture between Snecma of France and NPO Saturn of Russia. The SaM146, which produces thrust ranging from 68 to 80 kN, is installed on the Sukhoi Superjet 100.

The tests were conducted in the TsAGI transonic tube during cruise flight at Mach numbers between 0.75 and 0.82.

TsAGI specialists analysed the aerodynamic properties of a model aeroplane equipped with the nacelles of a newly developed PD-8 engine.

Another goal of the study was to discover the ideal installation angles for vortex generators on PD-8 engine nacelles.

In addition to weight studies, the oil film approach was used to visualise the flow around the joint of the wing, pylon, and engine nacelle to detect potential locations of undesirable interference.

Visualisation revealed no harmful effects in the installation location of the PD-8 engine nacelle.

Tests at TsAGI proved the SSJ-superior NEW’s aerodynamic qualities when powered by Russian engines.

The next phase of construction will commence in the spring of 2023.

TsAGI specialists will need to undertake experimental tests to corroborate the computed results and examine the Reynolds number’s influence to improve the wing lift’s aerodynamic properties.

Localising Sukhoi Superjet

Sukhoi Superjet 100 is a Russian short-haul twin-engine passenger aircraft that is capable of carrying a maximum of 108 passengers for a distance of up to 4,578 kilometres. Up to seventy per cent of the components that make up the aircraft are imported, the most notable of which is the SaM-146 engine.

It is anticipated that the SSJ New will include between 50 and 60 per cent Russian components, and the United Engine Corporation’s PD-8 engine will act as a potential replacement for the SaM146 (UEC).

The trials that are carried out at TsAGI will be an essential step in the process leading up to the flying tests of the SSJ-NEW aircraft, which the Irkut Corporation (which is a component of the UAC of Rostec State Corporation) estimates would begin in the year 2023.

Irkut intends to start the process of fitting a new power plant onto the aircraft in partnership with the UEC after conducting tests on a prototype of the PD-8 engine at the Il-76 flight laboratory.

After successfully completing both life and flight testing, Irkut will be able to acquire certification by the end of 2023SSJ-NEW and start mass manufacturing their product shortly after.

Sukhoi Superjet

Sukhoi Superjet 100 has a modern glass cockpit with five multifunctional screens. The SSJ100’s cockpit is outfitted with intuitive controls, an electronic display, a Thales avionics alarm system, and a completely digital fly-by-wire flight control system. The aeroplane is handled with side sticks rather than a conventional steering wheel. The full digital fly-by-wire flight control system with side sticks maximises aircraft performance, decreases crew workload, lowers fuel consumption, and provides overshoot protection.

The SSJ-100’s passenger interior is large and capacious and features relatively wide aisles between seats. The cabin’s width is 3.46 metres. Baggage racks have the highest volume in their category (50 litres). The passenger seats are positioned in a 2 + 3 configuration, and there is sufficient space between them for even the tallest passenger to stretch out their legs.

Additionally, the SSJ100 features LED lights. The use of LED lamps enables the brightness and colour of the cabin illumination to be altered as required. This technology is extremely advantageous due to its great energy efficiency and low aircraft maintenance needs.
