For decades, the world has spoken of India as a software powerhouse, a global services hub, and one of the largest consumer markets on the planet. More recently, the conversation has shifted towards manufacturing, supply chains, semiconductors, electronics, electric mobility, renewable energy and advanced industrial capacity. That ambition is both necessary and overdue. But India may have an even larger opportunity than building factories for the world: it can build the people who will run them.
A modern factory can cost billions of dollars. It can be filled with the finest machines, sensors, robots, and software available. Yet none of it matters if there are not enough people who know how to operate the equipment, calibrate it, maintain it, diagnose a fault, interpret production data and restore a line when something goes wrong. The industrial economy of the future will be technologically sophisticated, but it will still depend on human competence at every level.
Those people will not always be engineers with advanced degrees. Many will be technicians, machine operators, maintenance specialists, mechatronics professionals, quality controllers, process experts, automation specialists, and field service personnel. Their work may be less visible than the work of a scientist or design engineer, but it is no less essential. In many industries, it is the difference between a factory that exists on paper and a factory that actually produces.
The degree cannot be the only definition of talent
India, like many societies, has long attached enormous prestige to the university degree. That aspiration has produced extraordinary doctors, engineers, scientists, managers and researchers. It should continue to do so. But academic education and vocational excellence should not be treated as competing ideas. A country that wants to become a major industrial power needs both.
The deeper challenge is cultural as much as institutional. For too many families, vocational education can still appear to be a second choice, something to consider when the university route does not work out. The economy of the twenty-first century is making that distinction increasingly outdated. A highly skilled semiconductor equipment technician, robotics maintenance specialist, or industrial automation expert can possess knowledge that is scarce, difficult to replace, and extremely valuable to an employer.
Professional status should not be determined only by how many years a person spent in a lecture hall. It should also reflect what that person can actually do. If India succeeds in making technical skill a source of pride, aspiration, and social mobility, it will unlock a vast pool of talent that is currently underused.
From certificates to capability
India already has a broad base on which to build. Its industrial training institutes, polytechnics, skill centres, universities, and private training organisations reach an enormous population. The next step is not simply to expand the number of seats or courses. It is to make employability and industrial relevance the organising principle of the system.
A training institution should not be judged primarily by how many certificates it awards. It should be judged by how many graduates enter the field for which they were trained, how quickly they become productive, what wages they can command, whether employers want to hire from the institution again, and whether those graduates can continue to upgrade their skills as technology changes.
That requires a different relationship between education and industry. Employers should help design curricula before a course begins, not complain about skill gaps after it ends. Equipment manufacturers should participate in laboratories and instructor training. Students should work with machines and software that resemble what they will encounter in real factories. Apprenticeships should be treated as part of education, not as an optional extra after education.
The best vocational classroom should feel less like a classroom and more like the controlled environment of an actual workplace. Students should learn not only how a system works when everything is functioning correctly but also how to respond when it does not.
The opportunity beyond the metros
There is another reason why this deserves national attention. A new model of vocational excellence does not have to be concentrated in Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai or Hyderabad. It can become one of the most powerful economic engines for India’s Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities.
A high-quality training centre can create an ecosystem around itself. Companies arrive to recruit. Equipment suppliers establish relationships. Instructors and technicians find employment. Laboratories attract industry partnerships. Local businesses provide services. Young people gain access to advanced careers without necessarily having to migrate to a major metropolitan centre.
The model should not be to replicate the same institution everywhere. Different cities can develop specialised centres of excellence linked to nearby or emerging industrial clusters. One may focus on industrial automation, another on electronics manufacturing, another on semiconductor operations, another on electric mobility, renewable energy, medical equipment, or smart logistics. Depth of competence is more valuable than a catalogue of fashionable courses.
Training can become an export industry
The most ambitious part of this idea is also the most compelling. India should not think only about training enough people for Indian industry. It should consider becoming a global training destination.
India has already demonstrated that human capability can be scaled into a global economic proposition. The information technology and services industries showed that expertise developed in India could serve companies across continents. A similar mindset can now be applied to advanced vocational and technical training.
Imagine training centres in India designed jointly with global companies in semiconductors, robotics, automation, logistics, aviation, energy, and medical technology. The company defines the competencies it needs. The equipment maker helps provide the technology and technical standards. Indian institutions provide scale, instructors, infrastructure, and the ability to train not hundreds, but thousands and eventually tens of thousands.
Such centres need not serve Indian students alone. They could train participants from Africa, the Gulf, Southeast Asia, and other regions where industrialisation is advancing faster than the local training infrastructure. India could export curricula, simulation platforms, instructor development, certification models, and complete training systems. Some programmes could be delivered in India; others could be taken abroad through Indian-led partnerships.
This creates a new proposition for the world. Not only “Made in India,” but also “Trained in India.”
A higher value place in the global economy
The strategic value of such a model goes beyond tuition fees or employment numbers. Countries and companies that train people often help shape the standards, technologies, and professional networks around an industry. Training creates long-term relationships. It connects equipment makers with institutions, employers with future workers, and Indian expertise with industrial ecosystems across the world.
It would also help India move beyond the old idea that its principal advantage is inexpensive labour. Cost will always matter, but the more durable advantage is skilled labour: people who are productive, adaptable, certified to international standards, and capable of working with increasingly complex technology.
The demographic dividend is not automatic. A large young population becomes an economic advantage only when capability keeps pace with ambition. Otherwise, the same demographic scale can produce frustration, underemployment, and a widening gap between qualifications and opportunity.
For India, the question is therefore not simply whether enough young people are educated. It is whether they are being prepared for the work that industry will actually need five, ten, and fifteen years from now.
The human advantage
When discussing the future, it is easy to become fascinated by machines. Artificial intelligence, robots, semiconductor fabs, data centers, and automated production lines dominate the conversation. But every one of these systems still depends on people: people who design them, install them, operate them, maintain them, improve them, and know what to do when reality refuses to follow the manual.
India possesses something few countries can replicate at a comparable scale: a vast reservoir of young human potential, a growing industrial base, an established culture of technical learning, and a global reputation for producing capable professionals. The opportunity is to connect those strengths into a training system that becomes recognised around the world for practical excellence.
For years, the world came to India for software. Then it came for services. Increasingly, it is coming for products, engineering, and manufacturing.
The next great Indian export may not be a product at all. It may be skill.
India should certainly aspire to manufacture for the world. But it can aim higher still. It can become the classroom that trains the people who will operate the factories of the world.
