A big fire struck Rome in the Casilina area, near via Palmiro Togliatti. A large cloud of smoke is visible throughout the eastern quadrant of the capital. Several citizens are posting the photos, particularly from Centocelle, Cinecittà, Circo Massimo and the Appio district. Many have reported on social media that they have heard “explosions” and “roars”. The flames may have started from a car demolition depot near Centocelle Park and are spreading rapidly due to the wind. Some claim that the fire started from a tent. Firefighters are hard at work trying to put out the flames. Carabinieri, police and local agents also arrived on the scene.
“We invite citizens to keep the windows closed and to use the masks even on the street in the area affected by the dense cloud of smoke,” said the president of the V municipality of Rome, Mauro Caliste.
Serious inconveniences related to the cloud of smoke rising from the fire. The stretch of the Togliatti road between the intersection of via Papiria and via Casilina is closed.
According to what the firefighters report, the fire started around 4.50 pm at via Casilina. The flames would also have affected an abandoned area next to the archaeological park of Centocelle.
Another fire broke out this afternoon, around 2 pm, in via del Foro Italico, at the height of the former Campo Nomadi in Rome. The fire brigade is on the site. The flames started from the scrubs of uncultivated land, burning even heaps of waste and abandoned containers. The shutdown operations are still in progress.
