The MC-21 passenger aircraft from Russia has inaugurated a new era for Grozny International Airport by becoming the first aircraft to take off from the airport’s recently built runway. The flight is an important milestone for the reconstruction of the main airport in the Chechen capital and for the increasing presence of domestically produced civil aircraft in Russia.
The MC-21 arrived in Grozny from Zhukovsky in advance of the runway-opening ceremony. Yakovlev test pilots Oleg Mutovin, an Honored Test Pilot and Hero of Russia, and Andrey Voropaev, who were accompanied by test engineers Nikolai Fonurin and Anton Kuznetsov, flew it.
The aircraft’s arrival also carries significance for Russia’s aviation industry. Chechnya has become the first region in the North Caucasus to receive the fully import-substituted MC-21, giving the aircraft an opportunity to demonstrate its capabilities at a major regional airport outside its traditional test and production bases.
New Runway Marks Major Airport Upgrade
The new runway is a component of a major reconstruction initiative at Grozny International Airport, which is designated in honor of Akhmat-Khadzhi Kadyrov. As opposed to the airport’s current 2,500-meter runway, the new runway is being built with reinforced pavement that can accommodate aircraft with heavier takeoff weights and is expected to extend for 3,200 meters.
The Russian Transport Ministry has previously stated that the new runway will be 3,200 meters in length and will be accompanied by new taxiways, apron infrastructure, electricity facilities, water-treatment infrastructure, an emergency and rescue station, security facilities, and other airport systems. The airport’s capacity to manage aircraft in challenging weather conditions is also expected to be increased by the implementation of contemporary meteorological equipment and illumination.
Consequently, the endeavor is significantly more than the mere construction of an additional pavement strip. It is designed to enhance the airport’s capacity, operational flexibility, and capacity to accommodate a broader spectrum of aircraft by representing a significant expansion of Grozny’s airfield infrastructure.
According to the airport, its current runway is 45 meters in width and 2,500 meters in length. It is equipped with instrument landing and lighting systems that enable operations in low visibility and challenging meteorological conditions.
MC-21 Takes Centre Stage
The choice of the MC-21 as the aircraft to inaugurate the new runway gives the event a wider industrial significance.
The MC-21-310 is a new-generation narrow-body, medium-haul passenger aircraft that is currently under development by Yakovlev, a subsidiary of the United Aircraft Corporation, and Rostec. The aircraft is capable of accommodating between 163 and 211 passengers, contingent upon the configuration. In its standard two-class configuration, it has a maximum takeoff weight of 85 tons and a maximum range of approximately 3,830 kilometers.
The aircraft that visited Grozny is of particular importance due to the fact that Russia has been gradually replacing foreign components in the MC-21. In February 2026, Rosaviatsiya approved a significant modification to the aircraft’s type certificate that pertains to the use of domestically manufactured composite materials in the structural components of the vertical and horizontal stabilizers. Yakovlev stated that this marked the conclusion of a significant initiative to incorporate Russian composite materials into the aircraft.
The inaugural flight of the first serially produced MC-21-310, which was constructed using serial-production technologies, was conducted in August at the Irkutsk Aviation Plant. The flight was regarded by Rostec as a significant confirmation that the production chain was transitioning to serial aircraft manufacturing.
Chechen Leadership Inspects the Aircraft
Before the aircraft’s departure, Chechen Republic Head Ramzan Kadyrov, State Duma Deputy Adam Delimkhanov and Chechen Prime Minister Magomed Daudov inspected the MC-21.
Dmitry Yadrov, the head of Rosaviatsiya, accompanied them as they boarded the aircraft. Yakovlev test pilots Oleg Mutovin and Andrey Voropaev gave a presentation on the aircraft’s capabilities.
Kadyrov characterized the runway’s inauguration as an additional phase in the evolution of Grozny’s airport, contending that the modernized facility would broaden the geographic scope of flights and boost traffic.
Yadrov also emphasized the airport’s rapid expansion. He observed that a new air traffic control center, including Russia’s most modern 50-meter control tower, had already been operational. Additionally, the new runway is another significant milestone in the airport’s transformation.
Airport Designed for Higher Traffic
The airport’s capabilities are expected to be significantly enhanced by the runway project. According to local authorities, the airport will eventually be capable of accommodating approximately 1.2 million passengers annually. Grozny is anticipated to expand its network of destinations and accommodate modern aircraft with higher takeoff weights due to the longer runway, which measures 3,200 meters.
Progress has been achieved in constructing the runway throughout 2026. Work was in progress in June to connect the new runway with the existing runway infrastructure. This involved the milling of the old pavement and the installation of new asphalt concrete. Contractors had completed the upper concrete layer by July, and the subsequent significant phase was the installation of runway markings.
Domestically produced ILS 2700 landing system
The Azimuth manufacturing company has completed equipping Grozny Airport with domestically produced air navigation equipment. The final stage saw the installation of an ILS 2700 instrument landing system, which is used for aircraft landing approaches.
The ILS 2700 generates radio signals that onboard equipment uses to determine the aircraft’s position relative to the runway. The system transmits course deviation and glide slope information to the crew—the aircraft’s calculated descent path to maintain the aircraft’s heading and angle of descent in low visibility conditions.
The ILS 2700 installation completed the project to equip Grozny Airport with a suite of domestically produced systems. Azimuth previously supplied equipment for air traffic control, radar surveillance, communications, and navigation. The suite included the Galaktika air traffic control automation system, the RMP-200 radio beacon, the AORL-AMI 2700 radar, the DF 2000 automatic direction finder, the TRS 2000 automated transmit/receive center, and a comprehensive air traffic control simulator.
