Saikhom Mirabai Chanu created history by clinching India’s first silver medal in weightlifting in Olympics’ history. Chanu won the medal in the 49kg category.

The 26-year-old lifted 87kg in snatch and 115kg in the Clean and Jerk event to score 202 during the 49kg category final to create Indian history.

The gold medal went to the Chinese weightlifter HOU Zhihui who not just bagged the metal but also set new Olympic records. Hou lifted 94kg and she also went no holds barred for the clean and jerk round by lifting 116kg – and finished with a total 210kg, which is also a new Olympic record.

Chanu went past her Rio 2016 disappointment as she finished with a total of 202kg behind Hou.

The Indonesian debutant Windy Cantikah Aisah, won bronze with 194 points.

Japanese two time Olympic medallist MIYAKE Hiromi  went back home but had said that she did not expect to make it five times.

In other sports categories, Saurabh Chaudhary booked his spot in the final of the Men’s 10m Air Pistol, finishing top of qualification with a score of 586 as Abhishek Verma finished 17th. Deepika Kumari and Pravin Jadhav’s mixed team ran into the top seeds Korea and the quarters and the Indians were no match. The Koreans won 6-2 to move to the semis.
