An export version of the Su-34 frontline bomber has been delivered to a foreign customer and has already entered service, as Russia has officially confirmed. This information was previously hinted at through photographs, satellite imagery, and reports from aviation observers.
The Su-34E aircraft that were supplied under contract to an unnamed foreign customer have been placed in service with the air force, according to Alexander Mikheev, the head of Rosoboronexport. However, his assertion that the Russian side was receiving “exclusively positive” feedback on their operation was even more significant.
The statement represents a major development for the Su-34 programme. The actual delivery of the aircraft had not been officially confirmed, despite the fact that Russia had previously acknowledged the existence of contracts for the export version. Mikheev had previously stated that contracts for the Su-34E were included in Rosoboronexport’s purchase portfolio in November 2025.
Now, the aircraft has transitioned from the export catalog to operational duty with a foreign air force.
Algeria is the leading candidate
The customer has not been publicly identified by Rosoboronexport. Nevertheless, the evidence that is currently available strongly suggests that Algeria is the first foreign operator of the Su-34 family.
In June 2026, reports of Algerian Su-34s garnered significant attention when photographs and videos of the aircraft in Algeria were published online. Subsequently, satellite imagery furnished additional evidence of the aircraft’s presence at Algerian air bases. Algeria had become the first foreign operator of the sort, according to the Center for Analysis of World Arms Trade.
Algeria has been one of Russia’s most important defense customers for a long time and operates a substantial fleet of combat aircraft designed by the country.
The Algerian connection had also been the subject of speculation for years. Reports regarding potential Algerian interest in the Su-34 surfaced in 2015. It was later reported that Algeria was part of a more comprehensive package that involved Russian combat aircraft. The appearance of Su-34s in Algerian colors in 2026 transformed what was previously speculation into a much stronger indication of a genuine export program.
The mysterious orange aircraft
One of the most intriguing elements of the story has been the appearance of Su-34s in an unusual orange or desert-style camouflage.
In the past year, photographs that circulated online depicted aircraft that bore a resemblance to export Su-34s, painted in a unique orange-sand color scheme. The peculiar camouflage of the aircraft immediately sparked speculation that they were being prepared for the Algerian Air Force, as Algeria operates in a predominantly desert environment.
Those photographs were a significant component of the broader Su-34 export enigma. Although neither Moscow nor Algiers had publicly affirmed the transaction, observers began to associate the aircraft with reports of an Algerian order.
Algeria subsequently displayed an export Su-34 in a distinct camouflage pattern, which further heightened the intrigue of the narrative. The Su-34E was depicted in a blue-toned scheme in photographs published in June, as opposed to the orange finish that had been previously used.
That prompted a new question: were the orange aircraft truly intended for Algeria, or were they prototypes, training aircraft, or planes developed for another customer?
Open-source reporting remains inconclusive on that particular point.
From speculation to operational reality
The appearance of the aircraft in Algeria nevertheless established an important fact. The Su-34 was no longer merely being marketed abroad; it had evolved into an operational export product.
Algeria has received at least an initial shipment of aircraft, according to reports. However, a larger order has been associated with the country in a variety of open-source assessments. Although the precise contractual details have not been officially disclosed by either government, a specialist report has referenced a 14-aircraft Su-34E order.
Algerian military procurement is not uncommonly shrouded in secrecy. Specifics regarding weapon bundles, configurations, and delivery schedules have largely been absent from the public domain.
For this reason, Mikheev’s latest statement is especially important. While he did not identify Algeria, his confirmation that the aircraft have entered service provides official Russian acknowledgement that the Su-34 has crossed the export threshold.
A combat-proven aircraft enters the export market
Russia is also placing considerable emphasis on the Su-34’s operational experience.
According to Mikheev, the aircraft has demonstrated its performance during real combat operations and can conduct missions against ground, surface, and airborne targets in different weather conditions while also performing reconnaissance missions. Additionally, he emphasized Russian munitions that are intended for use in environments that are characterized by robust electronic warfare and air defense.
The combat experience has become a critical component of Russia’s international marketing strategy for its military aviation products.
The Su-34 was initially developed as a replacement for the Su-24 and was introduced to serial production in the mid-2000s. It integrates the strike function of a tactical bomber with the capabilities of a multirole combat aircraft. The aircraft is capable of operating over extended distances and carrying a substantial weaponry cargo, as per publicly available Russian sources.
